Empowering Local Students in Colombia At Benchmark, we believe in investing in the future of our local communities. This year, through our Benchmark for Better (B4B) initiative, we are proud to sponsor an ICFES preparation course for final-year students in Punta Canoa, which is home to our Benchmark Genetics Shrimp facility. The ICFES exam is a critical step towards university admissions and scholarships, and the goal is to help students improve their scores and access greater opportunities. The course is led by educators from the prestigious Jorge Washington School, one of the top academic institutions in the Caribbean region known for its outstanding ICFES results. Benchmark Genetics Iceland had the privilege of hosting the Minister of Food, Fisheries, and Agriculture and her team at our incubation centre and broodstock farm in Vogar this month. Bjarkey Olsen Gunnarsdóttir, the Icelandic Minister of Food, Fisheries, and Agriculture was joined by her Assistant, Pálína Axelsdóttir Njarðvík; Head of the Ministry of Food, Bryndís Hlöðversdóttir; and Director of Aquaculture matters, Kolbeinn Árnason. It was great to hear the group took a special interest in our advancements in broodstock management and cryopreservation technologies, recognising the critical role these play in the sustainable future of the aquaculture industry. #DrivingSustainabilityInAquaculture

Improving gill health in salmon    Benchmark Genetics has embarked on a three-year £1.2M research project in collaboration with experts at University of Stirling Institute of Aquaculture and University of Aberdeen Scottish Fish Immunology Research Centre.    The project, targeted at improving gill health issues in farmed salmon, is a key part of Benchmark’s strategic R&D initiative and aims to improve:   📈Performance  🐟Health  🏆Robustness against disease    Experts will research the influence of the microbiome on gill health, and the intersection with genetic resistance to complex gill disease.     Lead for Trait Development Andrew C Preston says “we have worked together with the University of Stirling for several years to run trials for complex gill disease resistance in our nucleus families. This project builds on our strategic partnership with the University and other centres of excellence". "We have demonstrated heritability of the trait, and this is now being combined with data on the same families from Scottish net pen farm environments".   "We will advance our understanding of the genetic basis of optimal gill health traits leading to a new gill health product focussed on improving salmon welfare at sea".    "Our aim is to develop tailored salmon genetic products with high robustness and survival in Scottish waters”. #DrivingSustainabilityInAquaculture Benchmark Genetics Chile Benchmark Genetics Iceland Benchmark Genetics Norway AS
