Bond Bryan's Sustainability Lead, Aditi Saxena talks about the importance of addressing the dual emergencies of climate change and biodiversity loss: "We are on our own journey to adapt and improve, but to do so we need the help of organisations, such as Architects Declare, to lead the way by providing the knowledge and guidance. Knowledge is the first step to action, and we see how successfully Architects Declare does both. We are extremely excited to announce that the Sustainable Materials and Manufacturing Centre (SMMC) has received planning approval from Rochdale Borough Council! This 42,600 sq ft facility at Kingsway Business Park as part of Atom Valley will be a pivotal asset in the UK’s manufacturing research and innovation portfolio, establishing important connections within the advanced machinery sector while also bringing the research power of higher education and the knowledge of industry partners under the same roof. In the first decade post-completion, the project is expected to generate 20,000 jobs and £1 billion in export sales within the HMV sector. With this significant contribution of roles specifically aimed at advancing sustainable materials and practices, the SMMC acts as an important player in driving the UK towards a greener economy. With a diverse range of state-of-the-art facilities, the building is equipped to carry the weight of these projections. Highly specialised workshops and laboratories, product development and analysis suites, open plan and cellular office spaces, and a 120-seat flexible conference space are all strategically integrated alongside common areas to create an environment where innovation and collaboration can thrive. Since Fairhurst Architects - part of the Bond Bryan Group have been brought into the Bond Bryan Group, I’ve been invited up by the team in #Manchester on a monthly basis over the last three months to explore how we integrate our National Living & Places Strategy within the North West going forward. I’ve always had a presence and some key business relationships in this fantastic region – especially through existing clients and collaborators and I'm looking forward to see how some of our current opportunities progress over the coming months. Philippa Birch-Wood and I had a fantastic evening at our inaugural Heads of Sustainability Supper Club last week, in Birmingham. In fact, it was such an awesome evening that neither Philippa nor I remembered to take any photos, you'll just have to take our word for it! Planned as a knowledge share/ support group, we aim to create a forum for those looking for a way to upskill themselves but also to push sustainability further within their practices. It was great to have such a mix of attendees ranging from architects, landscape architects, engineers and sustainability consultants. This was just the beginning. We hope to continue developing this, so if you're working on sustainability (in any capacity within your architectural practice), please do get in touch with me or Philippa, as we'd love for you to join us at the next session, in the new year.
