Cambridge Econometrics led an economic development impact study for the Massachusetts Downtown Initiative Program to understand the economic impacts of The Hudson Business Improvement District (BID), an organisation established in 2018 working to improve and support the transformation of Downtown Hudson making it an attractive place to live with vibrant businesses and attractions. In collaboration with consultant Ann Burke, Cambridge Econometrics developed a Theory of Change Impact Framework to quantify the outputs and impacts of BID. This first-of-its-kind impact assessment demonstrates the benefits to property owners who pay into the initiative, supports the BID's recertification and informs future plans. It serves as a pilot methodology for other BID areas and future evaluations in Hudson. ➡️ 83% of businesses report a positive impact from the BID ➡️ 12% increase in visitor numbers and 13% increase in visits ➡️ Positive impact on job creation in the area Find out more about the study here - https://bit.ly/3FAjI2Y Dan Hodge Jennifer Maria Carvajal

Updated analysis by Cambridge Econometrics for the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) highlights the shift in key export-oriented industries in the Appalachian region. The region's evolving industrial landscape now includes seven key clusters, and this report examines the key economic characterises of all of them and identifies important trends, such as the changing transportation infrastructure needs and the decline in rail transportation of coal. The findings from this analysis will aid policymakers in developing effective strategic economic development plans for the region in the future. ➡️ Appalachia's export industry clusters have changed over the years with greater emphasis on electronics, chemicals, machinery, and transportation equipment. ➡️ These clusters account for 15% of employment and generate 85% of foreign exports ($102 billion). ➡️ Appalachia’s exports reach Canada, Europe, Eastern Asia, and Mexico using multimodal transport: trucking, seaports, and airports. ➡️ Major airports outside the region and general aviation airports are crucial for air exports. ➡️ Inland ports are key for global connections, with rail transport growing for electronics and motor vehicles. Congratulations to President & CEO of the Western Massachusetts Economic Development Council Rick Sullivan, on a decade of successful leadership and service! We're proud to have been part of the Western Massachusetts Economic Development Council's journey over the past ten years contributing to the region's growth and innovation. Great to see the lasting positive impact that our transformative economic investment strategy with MassINC has had in the region. As Rick says, 'I've been in the public sector for over three decades, and I can say that report generated more enthusiasm, interest, inquiries and momentum than I’ve ever seen.' ➡️ Read the Annual Report: https://bit.ly/4bH4Prt ➡️ Download our White Paper: https://bit.ly/4hJl48O Dan Hodge
Here’s a 2024 ANNUAL REPORT QUICK TAKE! Rick Sullivan, President and CEO, reflected on ten years of service leading the EDC sharing: 🔹That 2024 was the BEST year of the past decade. 🔹Fierce success growing the EDC’s influence; gaining the attention of statewide leaders and policy makers allowing a seat at the table on larger policy issues. 🔹Not only doubling membership, but developing deep member commitment and loyalty. 🔹Vastly growing programming with an eye on workforce development 🔹Supporting the launch of many minority and women-owned businesses. 🔹Being awarded over $70 million through the state's Economic Development Bond Bill for investments in food science, quantum computing, and clean tech. 🔹Commissioned and funded a white paper produced by MassINC and Cambridge Econometrics Inc. on key investment areas for the region that, according to Rick, “generated more enthusiasm, interest, inquiries, and momentum” than he’s seen in over the three decades he’s been in the public sector. What role can public policy play in delivering a just transition to net zero for the most vulnerable in society? Reflecting on last week's Seventh Carbon Budget by the Climate Change Committee, Deputy CEO Jon Stenning shares his thoughts on the detail and care that will be required in developing policies that achieve the UK's carbon targets by 2050 whilst also not disadvantaging the most vulnerable in society. ➡️ making sure that low carbon technologies are accessible to low-income households, both in terms of affordability and ensuring incentives are aligned to get them into rented properties ➡️ ensuring that households are able to benefit from the increased rollout of low-carbon electricity generating technologies onto the grid #CB7 #CarbonBudget #ClimateChange #NetZero #UKDecarbonisation Jennifer Dicks Simone Cooper-Searle, PhD

Some thoughts from me on implications for the economy as a whole from the 7th Carbon Budget, published yesterday. There's lots to do in the coming years to keep the UK on track for decarbonisation by mid-century - and we need to make sure that it's delivered in a way which can help to accelerate the UK's economic growth, and that the benefits are shared across the population.
The UK’s Seventh Carbon Budget: Delivering the UK’s carbon targets by 2050 will involve structural shifts in the UK economy – and public policy has an essential role to play. Deputy CEO Jon Stenning shares his expert reflections, highlighting the scale of change needed across various sectors, the vital role of public policy, and the transformative economic benefits of decarbonisation.
