Today marked Day 1 of the 4th session of the Africa Climate Finance Leadership Programme, an essential gathering of leaders from Kenya 🇰🇪, Tanzania 🇹🇿, Ethiopia 🇪🇹 and Ghana 🇬🇭 to explore the transformative potential of #ClimateFinance for the continent. Against the circumstances of global pressures, biodiversity loss and rapid social and economic shifts, this cohort of delegates focused on redefining #Africa’s role in the climate finance landscape.
The session kicked off with thought-provoking discussions on the implications of today’s economic, social and environmental pressures and trends on Africa’s financial sector. We dug into climate science, addressing the urgency for African leaders to challenge the perception that financing Africa is "risky." The key takeaway from today’s session is reframing climate finance as necessary rather than optional for a sustainable global future.
Key highlights:
🔘 Understanding global pressures: The financial sector plays a pivotal role in addressing biodiversity loss, impacts on coral reefs, and ocean acidification.
🔘 Implications for Africa: How today’s framing of “risky” African climate finance deters investment and escalates capital costs - while recognising that inaction may be the riskiest choice of all.
🔘 Science & strategy: A deeper dive into climate science and the financial strategies needed for Africa to build resilience and drive sustainable economic growth.
Through this programme, in partnership with the University of Cambridge’s Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL), ESAMI and the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), African leaders are sharpening their understanding of climate finance, equipping themselves to mobilise capital flows toward impactful, climate-smart projects - setting the stage for an empowered, climate-resilient Africa.
