October is a powerful month of awareness, reflection, and commitment to tackling knife crime in Sandwell. Connexions Sandwell Careers Advisers visited the Knife Angel outside Sandwell Council today. We see thousands of Sandwell young people each year and one person lost to knife crime is one too many. The sculpture, made from over 100,000 seized blades, was specifically created to highlight the negative effects of violent behaviour whilst solidifying the critical need for social change. The Angel acts as a beautiful memorial designed to celebrate those lives who have been lost through violent and thoughtless actions. Make time to see this. #knifeangel Mark B. It's World Mental Health Day - In the UK around one in six people aged 17-19 have some kind of mental health condition, and the incidence among young people more generally has been steadily climbing. Did you know that Career guidance has a number of features likely to promote positive well-being, including recognising strengths, a focus on the future, setting achievable goals, and building a social identity through work. Career guidance resembles counselling in terms of providing one-to-one attention, and a safe space to young people to share their concerns. It may therefore offer some of the short-term well-being benefits of personal counselling. More importantly, career guidance supports young people to access decent work, and education or training opportunities that provide access to a source of income, social contact, purposeful activity, and some healthy challenges. It's good to talk 😀 #worldmentalhealthday

https://lnkd.in/eQcbKxWr What a great good news story. Our Careers Adviser Debbie Jones was approached by Tyler's mum to help and support her son. Debbie worked and supported him and then contacted Tom at The Albion Foundation. Tyler has flourished under the HATCH project. Well done Tyler 👌 😀 Jalal Uddin MBA Shokat Lal

Understanding and getting to know the range of provision available in the West Midlands and beyond, is incredibly important because it helps our careers advisers to ensure that young people receive the best guidance and support possible. Today at our monthly team meeting, we welcomed David Handy who eloquently described the provision at King Edward VI College, Stourbridge. Loads of great information shared ready for careers interviews with Sandwell young people. If you would like to come along to our monthly meetings please email sadie_bolton@sandwell.gov.uk Mark B.
