It was our final summer Sustainability Accelerator Session on Tuesday! We have had a successful 6 weeks, utilising B Corp's ESG framework to gain a deeper understanding of where our businesses currently sit and how sustainability strategy's can be used to identify long and short term goals for continuous growth. Did you know that clinical trials were not routinely conducted on women until the 90s? Did you know that this is such an issue that now female reproductive health is listed in 2 of the United Nations #SustainableDevelopmentGoals ? A highlight of my week was meeting Deirdre O'Neill cofounder of Hertility. She set up the business with her sister Dr Helen O'Neill to address the fact there is a complete lack of understanding and knowledge about female and reproductive health in the medical system and society as a whole.  They raised over £4m to get the business up and running, never easy when only 5% of funding goes to female founders. Here are the Sustainable Development Goals that the business is addressing: #SGD3, Good Health and Wellbeing where sub-indicator 3.7 puts a deadline on it: Ensure access to sexual and reproductive care, family planning and education BY 2030 ACROSS THE GLOBE. The second is #SDG5 Gender Equality, where sub-indicator 5.6 repeats the need for universal access to sexual and reproductive health, with the crucial addition of REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS for women and girls. Thank you to Marriott Harrison and Fran Spooner for organising yet another incredible event and bringing people together who are creating businesses that are on a mission to solve the #sdgs. I was invited to Westminster to host the Conscious Leadership Summit by Christina Brooks, CEO of Ruebik leaders in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and a #bcorp. It was a pleasure to learn from Baroness Sandy Verma who was appointed to the House of Lords in 2006 opened the doors to us and shared her insights so authentically. I spent the day listening to numerous experts including Dr Heather Melville, OBE, CMgr, CCMI, Hermann Trepesch Chinny Okolidoh, Shilpa Shah and Nadia Nagamootoo (she/her) Philip Parker who tackled challenging issues such as imperialism, colonialism, capitalism, and the UK class system. When we learn about DEI, we often focus first on race and gender. However, class is frequently overlooked, despite being deeply ingrained in the history of the UK. Research shows that class has historically trumped race. If you are wealthy enough, your heritage or the color of your skin becomes less relevant. The system worked for the upper class for many years, maintaining a divide that kept the majority in poverty. Capitalism changed our social classes, lifting many out of poverty but also causing inequalities and environmental collapse. I believe that if I had stopped anyone in the House of Lords corridor, they would now all agree – it’s not working for anyone anymore. Jason Stockwood reminded us, "All our systems are temporary." Our current system is changing. Capitalism has taken us so far, and now it is evolving. Together, we are shifting our global economy from a system that profits few to one that benefits all.
