We're pleased that Central Winchester Regeneration has taken another step forward, with Winchester City Council Cabinet approving the Development Delivery Plan - the first milestone since the Council signed a development agreement with Jigsaw by Partnership & Places, a consortium formed by Genr8 Kajima Regeneration, Thriving Investments and igloo Regeneration. The project is a once in a lifetime opportunity to create a magical new place that unlocks this part of Winchester and brings new life to this timeless city. The vision is for a sustainable, pedestrian-led quarter with a mix of uses defined by attractive public spaces, reflecting the distinctive character of the city centre. The development will better connect the regeneration site – which includes Kings Walk, the demolished Friarsgate Medical Centre site and the bus station – to the wider city and district. It will bring homes for people of all life stages, which will support local people, their skills and talent in the city whilst attracting new innovators and entrepreneurs. Cllr Martin Tod, Leader and Cabinet Member for Asset Management, Winchester City Council, said: “Central Winchester Regeneration is a vital opportunity to bring new life to the heart of our city – new homes – new jobs – new businesses – and do so in a way that’s true to the city and true to today. It’s a top priority for the council, and the decisions we’ve taken are the last big step before we get to the planning application. “The plan we’ve agreed lays out all the details of the delivery plan, infrastructure plan, public realm plan and phasing plan needed for Jigsaw to move ahead. They’ve delivered to the demanding standards we set them.” Read more about Central Winchester Regeneration at https://lnkd.in/eghA7bK5

  • It's a privilege and a real pleasure to have been appointed by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan as one of ten new 'Town Architects' to support the future development of ten locations in London. I look forward to working with the London Borough of Hillingdon as part of the GLA’s Town Architect pilot, providing support to achieve the best design outcomes for two strategic regeneration areas, Uxbridge and Hayes, by undertaking a review of the vision and development approach, establishing design principles and providing advice on the public realm and wider connectivity strategy.   The other selected Town Architects and places are listed below:    Ilford, LB Redbridge, with Jas Bhalla   Abbey Wood, LB Greenwich, with Adam Khan    Barking Riverside, LB Barking and Dagenham, with Ken Okonkwo    Hackney Central, LB Hackney, with Holly Lewis   Angel Edmonton, LB Enfield, with Hilary Satchwell   Lewisham & Catford town centres, LB Lewisham, with Farshid Moussavi   Croydon town centre, LB Croydon, with Paul Monaghan     Brentford, LB Hounslow, with Tom Holbrook   Northolt, LB Ealing with Alice Fung    #goodgrowthbydesign #mayoroflondon #hillingdon East architecture, landscape urban design ltd

It was great to be part of the Open City tours for #NortonFolgate recently. Specifically to talk about DSDHA’s 16 Blossom Street which I had the honour to work on over the last 6 years with such a great team – client, architects, consultants, and contractors – and part of a masterplan with a rich variety of buildings and public realm offer. There’s no place like Norton Folgate. Our new mixed-use scheme is a unique blend of old and new, creating highly sustainable, innovative spaces in an historic environment in the heart of the city. Created in collaboration with Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, Stanton Williams, Morris+Company and DSDHA our 330,000 sq ft development offers high-quality workspaces and attractive locations for retailers at the intersection of Shoreditch and the City of London. Hear more from Paul Monaghan and Paul Williams about how our four architects worked together to renew and enliven spaces that fulfil the highest modern standards for our occupiers to enjoy. • Thanks for this Jason. East enjoyed working on this with you, Marc and the rest of the team for Westfield. We also enjoyed the scrutiny on what it means to design spaces that are engaged with what exists, how to make them safe and distinctive, and be publicly accessible for girls in particular - on the roof of the car park East architecture, landscape urban design ltd

On Tuesday evening the LLDC and Newham Councils voted unanimously in approving Stratford M2 - a 530 bed PBSA scheme constructed on top of an existing car park and shopping centre as part of the Westfield estate. The proposal uses the capacity of the existing structure to bolt a further 14 floors of accommodation, extensive student amenity space, landscaped gardens and a fully public rooftop park that repurposes existing car parking designed in collaboration with julian lewis and EAST. Congratulations to James Buckingham and Westfield on securing this consent and presenting us with a compelling brief putting high quality student accommodation at its core along with key ambitions around sustainable urban intensification, repurposing existing structures and being generous and longtermist in the wider placemaking approach. The project has run from conception to planning consent in 10 months - this was achieved due to the rigour and skill of the whole consultant team and the robust, collaborative engagement with the LLDC planning team and other key groups. We are excited to see this scheme come to life!

  • Its great this project is gaining recognition. However the Norton Folgate design and delivery includes a sometimes unnoticed and important aspect; the network of public and private spaces that link the buildings and streets. East worked with the client and each of the excellent architects over many years to ensure a decent background was delivered that made use of existing materials, reused split and honed granite setts, in courtyards and streets within and without the buildings, and where appropriate we located some special pieces, a large tree, a seat; minor foreground moments. Elsewhere the spaces are generally spliced into the background of the city. We enjoy that many people may not notice the public realm design as a foregrounded aspect of the project; after all, there is so much going on with the buildings and activities. But we believe that the network of streets and spaces give amenity and allow spatial choices for people to walk, meet, sit and experience this amazing layered and rich part of London Allford Hall Monaghan Morris East architecture, landscape urban design ltd General Office Joe Morris @stantonwilliams Deborah Saunt Skanska

Read about British Land’s redevelopment of a network of semi-derelict streets on the edge of the City of London. A highly collaborative decade long project, involving Morris+Company and several leading architectural practices alongside Masterplan architect Allford Hall Monaghan Morris. Our involvement which covers 13-19 Norton Folgate, is a heritage driven project delivering retail and commercial workspace. The project involves extensive retention and renovation, refurbishment, and rebuild alongside a new element on the corner of 13 Norton Folgate. The design of this element reflects architectural principles of neighbouring Georgian and Victorian properties and its concept is borne out of vast body of research on site history and a rigorous public consultation process. Achieving BREEAM excellent, the scheme creates a community of small, flexible workplaces driven by the principles of low-energy, long-life and loose-fit. Norton Folgate has been shortlisted for a 2024 Brick Award in two categories, Urban Regeneration and Refurbishment. Norton Folgate sits within the Elder Street Conservation Area and occupies a prominent position within The City Fringe between the City of London and Shoreditch. The masterplan employs a building-by-building approach to the retained existing buildings, utilising restoration, refurbishment, extension, remodelling and façade retention to breathe new life into the architecture. Sensitively designed new buildings have been introduced in a palette of materials, including brick which was selected for its robustness, quality and appropriateness to the Conservation Area’s character. Here's our collaborative Bow Goods Yard masterplan featuring in Architects’ Journal. Irene Frassoldati, ML's associate architect: ‘This project is underpinned by the aspiration of being regenerative, rather than just sustainable. 'Giving back more than taking away, the masterplan adopts interfaced design for people and nature to regenerate ecosystems and benefit the community. We acknowledge that the long-term aspirations of the masterplan might be challenging to achieve in today’s market but the framework that we developed with Network Rail enables these stretch targets to be met throughout the development of the project.’ https://lnkd.in/efsr9727 #urbanaists #architects
