Experimental 1960s Archigram magazine is finally being reproduced!   Principal Director Alan Stanton has contributed to the landmark reissue of Archigram magazine - the revolutionary architectural publication which is the first record of Archigram's experimental architectural concepts envisioning everything from temporary cities to inflatable structures.   Only a few complete sets exist in libraries of this self-published, self-titled magazine, which came out in 10 issues between 1961 to 1974.    For the first time since their original release all 10 issues of this rare magazine are being reproduced in a special boxed set that meticulously preserves their distinctive physical form. This authorised reissue by @artbook and Designers & Books has just launched its Kickstarter which will run until 18th March.   Alan's contribution to this project reflects his deep connection to Archigram's radical vision and experimental approach. And indeed, in the late 1960s, after studying at the AA, Alan moved to Los Angeles and formed the group Chrysalis with a number of other artists.   Born out of the West Coast counterculture, Chrysalis was dedicated to building in the real world the kinds of experimental projects that radical groups like Archigram had envisioned. These included air structures and responsive environments, culminating in the mirrored dome for Expo '70 in Osaka, Japan.   💰 The $75,000 Kickstarter campaign runs through March 18 📦 Boxed sets start at $114 during the first week   Visit the Kickstarter page to back this ambitious project in its vital first days: https://bit.ly/3RgrDEX

  • Stanton Williams' Associate Director Eleni Makri Contributes to NLA #AdaptiveReuse Think Tank   Earlier this week, Eleni participated in an insightful Think Tank on "Adaptive Reuse: designing for adaptability and longevity" organised by the NLA. The session brought together thought leaders across the built environment to explore best practices and challenges in extending the lifespan of buildings through adaptive reuse.   Key discussion points included: - Challenges in adopting adaptive reuse approaches - Lessons from London's architectural past - Designing new buildings with 'long life, loose fit' principles - International best practices and knowledge exchange   We look forward to the publication of NLA's research findings and we continue to champion our approach to sustainable architecture—one that embraces both CONTINUITY, through designing buildings that evolve while maintaining quality and identity, and TRANSFORMATION, by viewing the dialogue between retained structures and new interventions as a creative opportunity that strengthens communities and ensures sustainable use of resources. Other contributors to the Think Tank include:  Audrey McIver Katie Parsons Charlotte O'Farrell Paul Simovic Christopher Wollaston Elizabeth Bolton Jennifer Pollard Ruth Oates Tom Stoneham Gareth Atkinson Marika Goldman Kye Taylor Photograph of Norton Folgate for British Land by HuftonandCrow

  • We're honoured that Stanton Williams' youth outreach programme was highlighted by Hattie Hartman HonFRIBA in her recent Architects Journal article "Community architecture is back. Is this part of the '90s revival or something more permanent?"    As Hattie observes, community engagement is increasingly central to our profession. From climate activism to social value initiatives, architecture is evolving to become more responsive and inclusive.   Since 2020, our practice has committed to investing in and significantly improving youth outreach initiatives as a result of the architectural industry's reckoning with the lack of diversity in its workforce. As part of this, we run a Future Architects programme in partnership with City & Islington College and participate in Open City's Accelerate and Young City Makers programmes. Earlier this year our endeavours were recognised with the Best of Built Environment Practice award by the TET (ThorntonEducationTrust) alongside a commendation in the Youth Long-Term Programme category.   Thank you Hattie for recognising our contribution alongside other inspiring initiatives working toward a more equitable and sustainable future for our industry. We believe these connections between education and practice are essential for nurturing the next generation of architects and designers who will shape our built environment.   #CommunityArchitecture #CommunityEngagement #ArchitectsJournal #ArchitectureEducation #SocialValue #StantonWilliams

  • We're excited to share insights from our Sustainability Manager Dr. Andrea Botti's recent NLA interview with David Taylor about our practice's commitment to environmental responsibility.   At Stanton Williams, we're building an internal database of embodied carbon case studies across diverse building typologies to inform future projects and accurately predict how our design choices impact carbon footprints. Starting with the recently completed transformation of Grade II listed Rhodes House, in Oxford, we've demonstrated our dedication to adaptive reuse while developing a new, standardised approach to carbon analysis.   Our upcoming ESG strategy will codify the sustainability principles that have long guided our practice, with a particular focus on: - Rigorous embodied and whole life cycle carbon analysis for all projects; - Post-occupancy evaluations; - Expanding our data collection for quantifiable sustainability metrics.   Andrea is also actively involved with the Architecture Climate Action Network (ACAN), working within the embodied carbon subgroup to empower practices of all sizes to conduct their own assessments.   As we continue to work on highly complex projects - such as the transformation of a group of historic market buildings into an exciting new home for the London Museum and the conversion of the 18th century Hôtel-Dieu hospital in Clermont Ferrand into a major new library and cultural destination in central France, we remain committed to honouring the urban fabric and identity of places while pushing the boundaries of sustainable design.
