In another Life Science revisit, here’s our concept for a medical research institute on a tricky triangular site for the Medical Science Division at University of Oxford. Fathom were invited to provide designs to help assess the viability of a new Viral Immunisation Research Building on an existing site. Through rigorous analysis of different plan forms and grids, a clever layout was found to efficiently house rectangular laboratory space on the triangular site, whilst respecting adjacent residential properties. Designs for a generous public square place the Institute at the heart of campus activity whilst creating an impressive setting for the building. Over at Lower Marsh this week, we’re inspecting these lovely Vandersanden Lima bricks being used on the new upper floors of LOMA. Fathom’s 6,300sqm refurbishment for Morgan Real Estate, currently on site with 8Build, reconfigures an existing 1990s building to introduce a variety of materials and textures to elevations and shopfronts. Our designs for LOMA thermally upgrade the entire structural frame – and as much of the existing façade as possible – reconfigure the entrance sequence, upgrade floors and add a multi-level extension to increase area and provide a 125sqm rooftop clubhouse. This week is set to be glorious sunshine, but we all know that the UK weather is a year-round mixed bag. We designed the 625sqm rooftop at 2 Pancras Square with a retractable canopy structure providing shade or cover for whatever the weather throws at us. Natural materials and plants were used to establish a sense of enclosure and privacy across the rooftop, filtering views and marking a clear shift from the office floors to a relaxed natural environment. Combined with carefully selected small trees, evergreen shrubs, ferns, grasses and a wildflower lawn we have ensured that the rooftop is an appealing space in all seasons. In collaboration with EStudioMix, we developed a resilient planting strategy to repurpose existing plants and materials, introduce a richer species mix to increase biodiversity and support natural ecosystems, reduce carbon and create year-round layers of interest. Spring has arrived this week, and everyone is looking for opportunities to be outside. Access to enjoyable outdoor space and connecting with nature are increasingly important aspects of a workplace’s offer. Last summer we completed a major overhaul of an existing 625sqm rooftop in King’s Cross, which was failing to attract people upstairs due to due to exposed and uninviting seating areas overlooked by neighbouring buildings, and monospecific planting. We re-zoned the rooftop to create a range of clearly defined spaces to enjoy individually or in groups - from informal meeting, dining and lounge areas to space for wellbeing activities.
