I’m pleased to announce that we are nearing the end of one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging pieces of work I have been involved in: how to decarbonise aviation in the most efficient way possible. We will be presenting our findings to senior members of the European Commission on 7 April and holding an event in Brussels a day later to present our findings to policymakers, businesses and other stakeholders. In these meetings we will discuss how to decarbonise aviation in a way that supports not only the climate, but important European policy objectives like enhancing economic competitiveness, energy security and tech leadership. If I can say so myself, our work truly breaks new ground by using a model-driven approach to assess the costs and benefits of different decarbonisation technologies on a levelised basis (i.e. in directly a comparable way that accounts for the different capex/opex balance of these different technologies). We show how these change over time, at different levels of decarbonisation and under different scenarios. In most scenarios, at higher levels of decarbonisation, we find that hydrogen-powered zero emission flight is the cheapest, even after paying the large up-front costs to get things started. Moreover, the complex R&D needed to unlock this technology will almost certainly provide large economic benefits to other sectors of the economy. Meanwhile, many in the aviation industry are diminishing the role they expect this technology to play in the decarbonisation mix before 2050. Why?
