It's all about lighting • Facade Lighting insta: https://lnkd.in/dKvtVPdZ ___________________________ • The Canal Turn (also known as '1 The Island Quarter') is the first realised part of the mixed-use masterplan 'The Island Quarter', designed by Jestico + Whiles with executive architect CPMG Architects and Interior Designers Macaulay Sinclair. • The façades have acquired a clear visual hierarchy, communicated through the consistency of the materials and the strong relationships between the different compositional elements. The lighting strategy devised by StudioFractal contributes to highlighting this hierarchy. Linear luminaires emit grazing light from below in the parts with brick, while rectangular wall recessed luminaire was used along the staircase. Arches are a repeated motif along the façade, forming window openings emphasised by the blade of light. "There’s something about this area that has attracted architects and creative types over the decades. Part of its appeal is the character lent by its narrow alleys and shortcuts between big-boned warehouses, and its tension between history and change," writes Chris Dyson on the Norton Folgate scheme in London. Masterplanned by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, the redevelopment of a corner of London’s Spitalfields combines restored and reworked historic structures with new buildings by Stanton Williams, Morris+Company, DSDHA and AHMM. Chris Dyson assesses the results of a decade-and-a-half of controversy, collaboration, creativity and change. “The big idea, which I felt from day one, was to have different architects working on it," said Paul Monaghan, AHMM’s Executive Director and Head of Studio speaking to Dyson. "I didn’t want it to feel like a homogenous scheme, but that it had different characters, with different styles of architecture. So that maybe, in 20 years’ time, you wouldn’t imagine it had been built in one go.” See more photos from Timothy Soar and hear more from both Dyson and Monaghan as well as DSDHA Director David Hills, Morris+Company Founding Director Joe Morris and Associate Director Elena Lledó Palomo, and British Land Chief Executive Paul Williams in the link below! ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eQ5tdqST Client British Land Masterplanner: Allford Hall Monaghan Morris Architects: Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, Stanton Williams, Morris+Company, DSDHA Public realm: East architecture, landscape urban design ltd Main contractor: Skanska Enabling works contractor: Cantillon Project manager: M3 Consulting Structural/civil engineer: AKT II Cost consultant: Turner & Townsend alinea MEP engineer: Arup Planning consultant: DP9 Limited Facade consultant: Eckersley O'Callaghan Sustainability consultant: Atelier Ten Access consultant: Hilson Moran Archaeology: MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) Fire engineer: Kiwa Fire Safety Compliance & IFC Certification Ltd Acoustic consultant: Sandy Brown Lighting designer: StudioFractal Security consultant: QCIC Health & Safety advisor: Arcadis Employer’s representative: RPP #nortonfolgate #brick #bricks #london #spitalfields #brickwork

Celebrating 25 Years of Creativity and Collaboration I first made photographs for Allford Hall Monaghan Morris in 1998, when I photographed their very splendid North Croydon Health Centre. The start of my collaboration with AHMM, very neatly, coincided with the beginning of Isabel Allen's tenure as Buildings Editor for the AJ. So here we are, over twenty-five years; a quarter-century; two-and-a-half decades later. Plenty of time for triumphs, mistakes, conversation, maybe a few well-intentioned disasters, and some wonderful successes. Somehow, through it all, we have continued to make things — buildings, stories, photographs, magazines. AHMM has been making places where people live, learn, work & thrive. They regularly win coveted awards, including an elusive Stirling. Isabel has been writing words and winning her own awards for editing and journalism. Oh, and building hundreds of homes with Kevin McCloud. I’ve been charged with recording it all, and perhaps helping to frame an argument that helps define a direction. If this were a novel, this would be the part, at twenty five years, where we reflect on what it all means. Instead here’s another collaboration, one I’m very happy with, one that celebrates Allford Hall Monaghan Morris's collaboration with Stanton Williams, DSDHA, Morris+Company, East architecture and British Land. All accompanied by wonderful words from Chris Dyson, conveying his thoughts and feelings that resonate deeply with the spirit of the project. So here’s to whatever comes next—more words, more pictures, more buildings. All addressing the pressing needs of the profession and our times, lives and living – things that matter. https://lnkd.in/ecTXPTGy Allford Hall Monaghan Morris / Stanton Williams / Morris+Company / DSDHA / East architecture, landscape urban design ltd / AKT II / Arup / M3 Consulting / Skanska / Morrisroe Demolition Limited / British Land / Turner & Townsend alinea / DP9 Limited / Eckersley O'Callaghan / Atelier Ten / Hilson Moran / MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) / Kiwa Fire Safety Compliance & IFC Certification Ltd / StudioFractal

We’re pleased to share some footage of Eden Dock, a transformative new public space at Canary Wharf. We designed the raised terrace, fixed decks, and bridges that link to floating pontoons, creating walkways and terraces for community use. These additions bring the public down to the water, with timber bleacher seating, amphitheatre steps, and native planting to enrich the biodiversity of the dock. Eden Dock reclaims this historic space as a vibrant hub for wellbeing, culture, and connection with nature.
