You can probably find all sort of ways to criticise today's #budget2024, but there's one issue that stands head and shoulders above anything else - the boost to investment (now and in future years). The UK has become a chronically low investment economy and, from business investment in clean technology to the parlous state of public services, the results of this are plain to see. You may think economic growth and tackling climate change are incompatible, but low investment will be a real killer. Unless investment is revived, the all-important clean power target, insulating homes, greening industry, new rail and bus services, even bike lanes will be more or less impossible. So the change Chancellor Rachel Reeves has made to the fiscal rule on government debt, opening up more fiscal space for public investment - the critical pump-primer of large scale private investment - is a potential game changer. And it's not only a game changer on climate change, but is also important for investment in the NHS, schools and other public services. If it's your thing, you can read more analysis from IPPR on what the fiscal rules change means and how significant it is in recent historical terms. https://lnkd.in/ejZ5WDEP
