Architecture and Planning

Making imaginative and considered architecture and urban design.

About us

Founded in 2007 by Jay Gort and Fiona Scott, Gort Scott is a RIBA chartered architecture and urban design practice with a focus on how buildings and places create healthy environments for better connections between people, now and for the future. We are committed to reducing our industry’s contribution to the dual crises of climate and biodiversity, working collaboratively to realise clients’ ambitions for regenerative, circular, and low carbon designs. We are attuned to working and thinking at different scales, from one-off houses to planning pieces of city, drawing out social and sustainable opportunities in each. We work on commercial, education, cultural and residential buildings as well as public realm and urban masterplans. We are recognised for our urban research, which informs the practice’s design work. Gort Scott’s founding principle of making a positive, imaginative and considered contribution to the built environment has seen them design a portfolio of projects ranging from leisure, retail, education, cultural and residential buildings to urban masterplans. Gort Scott’s work draws on a commitment to direct relationships with clients and in depth consultation to draw value from existing contexts and create innovative design solutions. Their experience of the planning process and informed use of technology and materials has led to repeat commissions from clients and their designs winning numerous competitions. Gort Scott is a Certified B Corporation. As a B Corp architecture practice, we’re part of a global community of businesses that meet high standards of social and environmental impact.

In case you haven't already seen it, I'm proud to share Gort Scott's B Corp Impact Report, which clearly and transparently outlines how we've performed in our first year as a Certified B Corporation. Formalising our commitment to people and planet in this way holds us to account. As architects and built environment professionals, our largest impact comes from our project work. This reminds us to advocate for the best possible standards as we lead one of London's largest masterplans. At this scale, even a modest improvement over current good practice will achieve an enormous impact.

It’s #BCorpMonth and we are celebrating our one-year anniversary of being a Certified B Corporation. ▪️About us▪️ Founded by Jay Gort and Fiona Scott, Gort Scott is focussed on how buildings and places create inclusive, healthy environments for better connections between people, now and for the future. The practice was established in 2007 and is founded on friendship and a commitment to the environment. ▪️Why did we want to become a Certified B Corporation?▪️ B Corp accreditation has provided a robust framework through which to unpack, analyse, manage and improve in all areas of our business operations.  For a small business, this extensive but comprehensive approach under one coherent banner, has been invaluable. B Corp helps us to manage, as well as promote collectively our awareness, measurement, accountability, learning and continuous improvement. Becoming a Certified B Corporation is also about being part of a collective movement, to amplify the voices of smaller businesses, giving weight and credibility to the value brought by better business practices. ▪️How did we score?▪️ We are proud to share our B Impact Assessment Score: 114.3. For context, the average qualifying company scores between 80 and 90 points the first time they certify. You can read more in our B Corp Impact Report 2024 https://lnkd.in/eFWNTegF ▪Community▪ 33% of our current live projects are for the public sector 32 days of outreach planned for the 2024-25 academic year 1% of company profits donated to charity ▪Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) & Social Value Action Group▪ Our EDI & Social Value Action Group is made up of 5 staff members. Our EDI Action Plan focuses on recruitment; workplace culture; progression and leadership opportunities; broadening industry diversity; and on managing, monitoring and reporting. Our Social Value Aims focus on promoting skills and employment; supporting local economies and responsible business; creating safe, inclusive and healthy places; promoting shared experience; and supporting active citizens. We will share more about our aims and actions in the coming months. 📷 Electric Avenue, Brixton Market (Jakob Spriestersbach), St Catharine’s College Cambridge (Jim Stephenson)

  • "Workers" is one of the five B Corp impact areas on which we are assessed. It focuses on our contributions to employees’ financial security, health and wellbeing, career development, engagement, and satisfaction. #BCorpMonth ▪️Positive work culture▪️ Our 'GS Life' team organises social activities within the practice. The group was established in 2020 to foster a sense of connection and support employee wellbeing. Activities have included communal lunches, 'show and tell' presentations, train travel abroad, building visits and sunny park socials. ▪️We take fair pay seriously▪️ We monitor various metrics to ensure we pay our staff fairly. All our staff, including interns, are paid above the London Living Wage. Our pay ratio is below 1:3. The highest paid members of staff earn no more than 3 times the lowest paid. Our gender pay gap is 8% which is half the industry average of 16% ▪️Our team▪️ 45% identify as female 18% LGBTQIA+ 21% BAME 6% disabled 80% of UK educated team attended state school ▪️How do we measure worker satisfaction?▪️ We conduct a 'flow diagnostic' questionnaire alongside our annual review process. Staff answer 20 questions to assess their emotional, behavioural, and strategic agendas. Since measuring began in 2021 all staff have scored positively and our average score puts the office into the 'flow' zone of high performance and satisfaction year-on-year. A large part of the B Corp ethos - and our own - is setting ambitious targets and striving for continuous improvement. In our first Impact Report we outline our aims and actions for the coming year and we look forward to sharing our progress with you in a year’s time. Gort Scott first achieved B Corp Certification 1 year ago. Our B Corp Certification demonstrates that we meet rigorous standards for environmental and social impact. As part of this certification, B Corps are required to publish an annual report. The primary purpose of a B Corp Impact Report is to transparently communicate our performance over the past year. We are pleased to share our first report, published today.  https://lnkd.in/eFWNTegF In the coming days we will be sharing some highlights from our report and our motivations for becoming a Certified B Corporation. We structured our Impact Report according to the five impact areas: Governance, Workers, Community, Environment, and Customers. Our report highlights not only our achievements but also our goals for the future. A large part of the B Corp ethos - and our own - is setting ambitious targets and striving for continuous improvement. #BCorpMonth #GenB #BCorpAnniversary B Lab UK

  • The New Court, Girton College is the overall winner in this year’s AR Future Projects awards! ✨✨ The New Court is the most significant addition to Girton, the UK’s first full-time institution for the higher education of women, since its foundation in 1869. The project will allow Girton to accommodate a larger number of undergraduate and postgraduate students in the heart of the College, while improving conference and performance facilities, including an iconic auditorium. With an emphasis on sustainability, the new buildings will utilise innovative structural solutions to reduce carbon and meet Passivhaus Plus targets, all set within a bio-diverse landscape that extends an existing Orchard and includes waterways and wetlands. Launched in 2002, The Architectural Review's Future Projects awards are a window into tomorrow’s cities. Celebrating excellence in projects still on the drawing board or currently under construction, and the potential for positive contribution to communities, neighbourhoods and urban landscapes around the world.
