Planning approved 🟢 Last week our proposals for 326 new affordable homes and ten townhouses at Silvertown were approved by Newham Council Planning Committee. The development is a key element in an early phase of the £3.5 billion programme led by The Silvertown Partnership – in conjunction with the Greater London Authority and Homes England – to regenerate 50 acres within the Royal Docks Opportunity Area in Newham. Founded on the area’s rich industrial heritage, the diverse Silvertown neighbourhood will form a vibrant new centre for the Royal Docks and Newham, bringing around 6,500 new homes, 500,000 sq.ft of leisure space, 1,200,000 sq.ft of workspace, and a high quality public realm and network of green spaces. Our work was informed by our knowledge and expertise about High Streets and public spaces, and a desire to create a characterful and successful new neighbourhood with plentiful opportunities for social integration and interaction. The development forms a significant part of the western boundary of the masterplan – knitting into the existing fabric of Silvertown, introducing new neighbourhood connections, and creating welcoming public spaces for the whole community. Construction is due to commence in the autumn. The Pineapples 2025 shortlist has been announced and Forest Road is in the running for an award in the Building category 🍍✨The Pineapple for Building seeks to recognise a completed building that makes a positive contribution to the wider place and its people. Forest Road provides 90 affordable one-bedroom homes for local first-time buyers in Walthamstow. The building achieves a high density of affordable housing within a predominantly low-rise context, with sensitivity to neighbouring terraced housing. The triangular site has contrasting contexts, with two-storey Victorian terraces lining streets on two sides and the arterial Forest Road as its main frontage. The scheme considers not only its occupants, but sensitively negotiates these differing characters with a sculpted massing that steps up from three to five storeys on Forest Road, reinstating active frontages that were part of the historic urban grain. 📷: Jack Hobhouse Client: Pocket Living #architectureawards #thepineapples

In 2024 Gort Scott earned B Corp certification. Our Practice Manager Gemma Jachnik was the driving force behind this achievement. From leading on our carbon emissions reporting, revealing the contradictions and complexities inherent in that process, to her invaluable contributions to our EDI group, thank you to Gemma for her initiative, care and commitment to driving meaningful progress throughout the studio. In addition to her skills as a data and analysis aficionado, Gemma is the initiator of Gort Scott’s inaugural ‘Bake Off’, raising funds for Cancer Research and Movember. #GSTeam #studioculture #BCorpUK

Associate, Andrew Tam, reflects on his visit to Chiswick Park Footbridge - An exemplar of sustainable, low-carbon design by Useful Studio - Architecture and Expedition Engineering Ltd.
It was a pleasure to visit the award-winning Chiswick Park Footbridge earlier this week with colleagues from Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation (OPDC) and Allies and Morrison. The bridge by Useful Studio - Architecture and Expedition Engineering Ltd (a current collaborator) exemplifies sustainable, low-carbon design and construction, connecting over a railway to the business quarter at Chiswick Park. The design team shared challenges faced during the bridge project, including stakeholder engagement to successfully implement a more transparent and lightweight design that increases perceptions of safety, resulting in an elegant outcome through structural economy, and using on-site assembly to minimise the time required to position and construct the bridge. RSHP’s masterplan at Chiswick Park sets out a series of office buildings with lush, permeable public realm and communal amenities around a beautifully considered park and lake. I’m not generally a fan of business parks from a placemaking perspective, but in terms of what it means to create an attractive place to work, this certainly provides food for thought. It's true: I have a new role within Gort Scott, as we get to grips with increasing responsibilities across the sector. Our view is that the discussions and systems needed for sustainability and compliance should be a driver for positive change more generally - a way of spreading best practice around the firm. Looking forward to testing this in 2025 ...
How should we respond to changing circumstances? This is something we have been thinking about deeply over the last year, with the building safety regime now in place and climate issues ever more front and centre. There are growing responsibilities across our sector. In response, we have created a new role within the practice: Sustainability and Compliance Lead. This gives us a full time focus on everything that is best practice across environmental, compliance and related fields such as access and inclusivity. These are at the heart of what Gort Scott do, a fantastic opportunity to push forward with what we believe in. We are very pleased to announce that Associate, Jonathan Mann, has taken on this role, a natural progression from his work steering our Environmental Action Group and CDM team. Jonathan brings a huge amount of project and practice experience. Alongside our Technical Director, Chris Neve, he will champion our expanding technical capabilities. As Gort Scott grows and engages with changing circumstances, we are continuously upskilling and refining our approach. Congratulations to Jonathan on his new role.
