Last week during #ClimateWeekNYC, our New York studio hosted a panel discussion on the decarbonization of the built environment. Following a brief introduction of Grimshaw’s history of sustainable design practices and a launch of #Minoro to our North American market, Paul Toyne, our Head of Sustainability, led the panel in a deep-dive discussion on the challenges and opportunities in decarbonizing buildings. The panelists, which included Fiona Cousins of Arup, Dr Stephen Richardson of WBGC, and William Horgan of Grimshaw New York, explored a number of topics: how city regulations are impacting the decarbonization process; the need for market transformation to offer a better ROI for achieving decarbonization goals; the challenges of navigating operational and embodied carbon reductions; the importance of scalability in gaining mass adoption of decarbonization practices; and the critical benefits of circular design. After the panel discussion, Aaron Vaden-Youmans, our Sustainability Lead for North America, led an interactive demonstration of #Minoro to illustrate how the platform can help accelerate the decarbonization of buildings. #ClimateWeekNYC #Minoro #Decarbonization #Sustainbility

A vital active travel link for the city and a new piece of the public realm — Newport Station Bridge has been shortlisted for the Architects’ Journal Architecture Awards. The awards recognise the very best-built projects in the UK, and the bridge, designed by Grimshaw with Newport City Council, Arup, Cass Hayward LLP, and Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd, has been shortlisted in the Infrastructure and Transport Project category. The unique pedestrian and cycle bridge forms a vital crossing over the Great Western Mainline Railway in Newport. It provides a safe, legible, and welcoming route for pedestrians and cyclists, that is accessible to all, replacing a dilapidated subway and reconnecting the urban fabric on either side of Newport Station, which for decades had been severed by the railway and a network of busy roads. “Our residents had made it clear to us that a safer, more accessible link between Devon Place and Queensway and the city centre was important to them. By making it easier for people to choose active travel options when travelling to and from the city centre, we are helping to build a greener, healthier Newport for everyone.” — Councillor Mudd of Newport City Council stated. #AJArchitectureAwards #Infrastructure #Transport
