New affordable homes for Waltham Forest! We recently celebrated the completion of high-quality residential homes within our Wood Street Families and Homes Hub project for the London Borough of Waltham Forest. This mixed-use scheme provides 67 new, affordable homes (29 for social rent and 38 for shared ownership) a café and a community hub which when complete will provide much needed space for local residents to access family and housing services. In response to Waltham Forest Council’s declaration of a climate emergency, the project endeavours to exceed conventional sustainability standards and demonstrates our approach to designing high-quality homes regardless of tenure. This benchmark project for Waltham Forest sets a high standard for the design of future affordable housing. A big thank you to London Borough of Waltham Forest, Hill Group and the wider design team for their contributions to this exemplar project and ensuring a collaborative spirit throughout. https://lnkd.in/e3HUWU7s Design Team: London Borough of Waltham Forest, Hill Group UK, Price & Myers, Sweco, CMA Planning, Potter Raper, XCO2, Colne Valley and TPN HT Team: Laura Gaskell, Sho Das-Munshi, Lydia Hair, Chloe Lockhart, Jonnie Rees + all other valued members of the HT team that have since moved on. Architecture and Planning
We are a Stirling Prize-winning architectural studio with an international reputation for intelligent, purposeful design
About us
Haworth Tompkins was formed in 1991 by architects Graham Haworth and Steve Tompkins. Our London-based studio has designed buildings in the UK and elsewhere for clients across the public, private and subsidised sectors including schools, galleries, theatres, concert halls, housing, offices, shops and factories. Our buildings are influenced by the specific chemistry of individual places and cultural situations. We put enormous effort into understanding a building's context and the needs of its users, a process which often yields original or unconventional solutions. What they have in common is an approach rather than a stylistic signature. Professionalism and sustainability in the widest sense underpins our creative output. The combination of a relatively small, close-knit team and a carefully limited number of projects in development at any one time enables us to offer an exceptional level of service to our clients. Our work has won over 100 design awards including the 2014 Stirling Prize for the Everyman Theatre, Liverpool. Follow us on Twitter and Instagram @haworthtompkins

Battersea Arts Centre 10 Years On. Ten years ago today, on 13 March 2015, Battersea Arts Centre was saved from a fire that consumed the Grand Hall. Haworth Tompkins is incredibly proud to have supported BAC in the rebuilding of the Grand Hall and despite the tragedy of the fire, we have fond memories of the reconstruction process. We particularly remember the huge groundswell of support that helped to save and revitalise the building - the team at BAC, the emergency services, the local community, audiences, artists and performers, insurers, heritage stakeholders, contractors and design colleagues. It has been a pleasure to see BAC adapt and evolve over the past 10 years to become such a significant cultural and community asset. #HaworthTompkins #BAC #GrandHall #10YearAnniversary #Community #Cultural #Heritage #Asset Battersea Arts Centre, Price & Myers, Heyne Tillett Steel, Theatreplan, Charcoalblue, Skelly & Couch, XCO2, Gillieron Scott Acoustic Design, Sound Space Vision, 8build, Ashe Group, Gilbert-Ash, Bristow Consulting, Jake Tilson

Our project for Pembroke College, Cambridge has won several awards at the Cambridge Forum for the Construction Industry (CFCI) Awards. These awards recognise the very best of the buildings that are shaping Cambridge - whether through trailblazing sustainability, exemplary restoration, or community impact. - Winner: Best Refurbishment over £3m - Winner: Craftsmanship Award - Highly Commended: David Mackay Award for Engineering & Sustainability - Highly Commended: Contractor (Cocksedge Building Contractors Limited) We are honoured that the judges have recognised Pembroke Mill Lane for its innovation, design excellence, craftmanship and complexity in both design and delivery on what is a highly complex site in the historic city centre of Cambridge. We want to extend our congratulations and thanks to the whole design team – these awards recognise the importance of collaboration between all members of the client and design team – architects, contractors, structural and civil engineers, services engineers and landscape designers – in delivering ambitious and pioneering sustainable design. The judges commented that “The project needed to apply a vast range of craft skills due to its size, complexity and multi-faceted nature. The Mill Road complex presented huge challenges, and we were awed and impressed by the quality, detailing, diversity and beauty of what has been created. We particularly commend the recycling of materials, including timber and brick; the careful sourcing of new timber; the fact that where possible historic features have been left to add character and personality; and the clever integration of new features, such as the forged grille at the street entrance.” Pembroke College, Cambridge, Bidwells, Cocksedge Building Contractors Limited, Max Fordham LLP, Joel Gustafsson, Gleeds, Price & Myers, Tom Stuart-Smith Studio, Charcoalblue, WSP, Turley, Alison Turnbull (Public Art), Kellenberger–White, EURBAN Limited Beatie Blakemore, Hannah Constantine, Tania Oramas Dorta, Joanna Sutherland 📽️ Fred Howarth #GCDCA2025 #GreaterCambridgeDesignConstructionAwards2025 #Architecture #Refurbishment #Sustainability #Engineering #Craftmanship #PembrokeCollege #Cambridge

Infill traits: how to kickstart housebuilding on leftover urban plots. Fantastic to be part of this recent in-depth article on the challenges and opportunities of using infill sites for housebuilding - Architects’ Journal by Richard Waite. HT Director Chris Fellner commenting on some of the current issues preventing a wider adoption of infill housing, including inflexible planning rules, highly prescriptive efficiency targets, minimum space standards and very strict environmental regulations. ‘There is very little appetite for [architectural] innovation... design quality is measured solely in terms of ‘what percentage of dual aspect homes are achieved and how may hours of daylight the shared courtyards achieve on the 31 March’. https://lnkd.in/d5Akvtqj Other great contributions by: Mellis Haward, Colm Lacey, Jay Morton, Chloë Phelps, Olga McMurdo, David Gouldstone, James Bazeley, Huw Anwyl Williams, Steve Sinclair, Bhupinder Singh Chawla 📸 Augustin Coll

Haworth Tompkins became a B Corp in 2022 ranked as the second-highest UK architectural practice with a score of 136, exceeding the 80-point threshold for certification. While we are incredibly proud of this outcome, we appreciate the opportunity to reflect on our achievements and set targets for further improvement. The B Corp certification standard is ingrained in our organisation and informs our ethos, purpose, and business strategy. Our first impact report delves into the five impact categories and our guiding principles to explore the improvements we have made. We also spotlight projects we have undertaken that we believe encompass the ethos of the B Corp criteria, further demonstrating our commitment to embedding these into our work. The history of The Old Vic certainly packs a punch. No doubt so will its future. In its 19th century origins as the Royal Coburg Theatre, it gave young Black American actor Ira Aldridge the platform to launch a ground-breaking international career which saw him become one of the biggest stars of his day. In 1858, sixteen people died after mass panic caused while an actor's clothing caught fire. Under suffragette Emma Cons, the rebuilt Royal Victoria Hall and Coffee Tavern was run on strict temperance lines. Penny lectures given in the hall, backstage and in dressing rooms led to the foundation of the Morley Memorial College for Working Men and Women. The Old Vic was damaged badly during the Blitz, and the war-depleted company spent all its time touring from its makeshift base in Burnley before it eventually returned to Waterloo in 1950. Fast forward to 2025, and The Old Vic Backstage will provide a new six-storey civic infrastructure for creativity, education and community that will enrich the public realm in two of London’s most thriving boroughs. The Backstage will open later this year, with financial support by Lambeth and Southwark Councils, HM Government, a range of trusts and foundations and the Mayor of London’s Good Growth Fund. Supported by a heroic glulam superstructure that was designed in Devon, manufactured in Austria and assembled on the Waterloo Road, the BREEAM excellent rated building will: > Provide a new Clore Learning Centre, a script library and purpose-built studio space to reach young people, early-career artists and those interested in the arts > Double the number of education, community and artist development participants working with the theatre > Allow emerging artists from all backgrounds to network, share stories and present work in a purpose-built studio space and writers’ room > Make the stage and back-of-house areas accessible for the first time in over 200 years for visitors, staff, casts and creative teams > Provide a new neighbourhood hub with a cafe-workspace, meeting place for get-togethers, creative conversations or learning and reflection. Thank you to Laura Stevenson, Victoria Burton and team for taking the time to welcome us and show us their great work with architects Haworth Tompkins and RISE CONTRACTS LIMITED. #goodgrowthfund

HT’s Alex Cox and Sophie Emerson volunteered with ACAN! at Futurebuild 2025 supporting the volunteer led network. Over the three-day London conference ACAN! put on a series of talks and workshops with Alex and Sophie attending and helping out. On Tuesday ACAN!: Ecology’s “Multi Species Planning Assembly” workshop. Attendees were encouraged to challenge a planning application from the point of view of under considered stakeholders such as animal and insect life, plants and bodies of water. The ways in which these stakeholders interact and co-exist lead to the conclusion that developments are more successful the more they cater to their interlocking needs. On Wednesday, Global Generation, a youth education charity who are championing natural, sustainable and regenerative materials, presented about their work building their first permanent garden in Kings Cross. This was then followed by a live demonstration of natural material techniques they are using and making on the site; handmade bricks, traditional sweet chestnut shakes and CobBauge construction.
