What does it take to achieve Passivhaus certification on a large, complex project? Hopkins Associate Director Tim Lynch talks us through the process and challenges behind the design of the University of Oxford’s Schwarzman Center for the Humanities in our latest journal piece. Due for completion next year, the building is currently on track to be the UK’s largest Passivhaus certified building, and the first in the world to contain a concert hall. With the school, we chose to use Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) construction to substantially reduce the development’s embodied carbon footprint. In the initial stages of design an assessment was carried out comparing the embodied carbon of three distinct structural materials for the superstructure. This analysis revealed that the timber frame exhibited the lowest embodied energy. Opting for a CLT construction has yielded notable benefits, with early assessment demonstrating a remarkable reduction of up to 56% (excluding sequestration) in the development’s embodied carbon per square metre compared to conventional methods. By specifying various visual grades of CLT and paying attention to the appearance of the Glulam beams to the main roof and cloister columns, we were able to leave elements of the structure exposed. This complements the other construction materials as well as the adjoining existing buildings and natural surrounding context. The cloister integrates the Design Technology Building into the new SciTech campus. The existing building has been partially demolished at its west end, and a new full-height glazed frontage added on the cut line. This opens up views into the workshop and, in the opposite direction, from Design and Technology across the new courtyard. Conversation and collaboration between the two disciplines has been opened up by this new visibility, with both staff and students enjoying the benefits. In the summer term, Briony Marshall, STEM Artist in Residence, used this space looking out into the courtyard so pupils and staff were able to witness her creative process as she develops artworks investigating scientific ideas and processes. The cloister itself, housing a number of desks and casual seating, has become an incredibly popular informal space for study, meeting and group work, with whiteboards to allow pupils to note and share ideas. 🎬 We’ve just wrapped up filming another episode of the High Point podcast at 𝐒𝐭 𝐆𝐞𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐞’𝐬 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐞 in Great Yarmouth. In this episode: 🎙️ 𝐃𝐞𝐛𝐛𝐢𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐬𝐨𝐧, director of St George’s, shared what it takes to manage a historic theatre with a unique character. 🎙️ 𝐏𝐚𝐮𝐥 𝐃𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐬, a historian, told us about the theatre’s journey from its beginnings as a church to its role as a theatre today. 🎙️🎥 (vlog) 𝐃𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫 (MBE) guided us through the recent renovations, explaining design choices made by Hopkins Architects to preserve the building’s heritage while making it fit for modern use. The episode will be out soon – stay tuned for an inside look at the theatre’s history and transformation.

SciTech doubles the School’s previous science provision and the new buildings provide better connectivity between STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) disciplines and contribute to a more collegiate campus environment. The new Teaching Building containing biology and computational laboratories is arranged in a three-storey high linear black, as an extension to one of the wings of the Baker Building. Classrooms are located at either end of the block allowing for windows on all three sides to maximise daylight and views. The fourth side of the courtyard is formed by a two-storey Stan-X Research Building top-lit with a butterfly-roofed lantern. For the next few weeks we are going to be looking at SciTech, our recently completed Science and Technology campus at Haileybury School. SciTech integrates an extension with two existing buildings, the neo-classical Grade II listed Herbert Baker Building and the 1990s Design Technology Building, around a central courtyard and cloister. The rear of the Baker Building has been carefully opened up to create an axial connection between one side of the cloister and the Design Technology Building opposite. To accommodate the cloister and courtyard and orthogonally integrate it into the project, the west end of the Design Technology Building has been partially demolished.
