Hopkins Architects is an international architectural practice with studios in London and Dubai. Led by its five Principals, the practice’s work is rooted in clear and logical design thinking, a deep understanding of the potential of materials and craft, and consideration of context. A consistent and rigorous approach has resulted in a portfolio of ground-breaking, beautiful and functional buildings across Europe, the US and Asia.
For this month’s away day, the PUBLIC PRACTICE team visited Woking’s WWF-UK Living Planet Centre, designed by Hopkins Architects. This collaboration between an ambitious client, thoughtful architectural design and Woking Borough Council demonstrates how underutilised urban spaces can be reimagined for sustainability.
Built above a public car park, this partnership with Woking Borough Council transforms underutilised airspace into a thriving, eco-conscious hub. Inside, we explored how it integrates renewable energy, rainwater harvesting and community engagement, demonstrating how sustainability and placemaking can work hand in hand.
The WWF-UK Living Planet Centre is a powerful example of how visionary thinking can turn overlooked spaces into assets, creating places that benefit both people and the planet.

Works are currently underway on-site at South Molton.
Set for completion in 2027, the two-acre redevelopment for joint venture Grosvenor and Mitsui Fudosan UK, will transform a prime, but underutilised area in Mayfair into a high-end office, retail and leisure community.
Our design provides two new office buildings at the heart of the scheme which will offer 150,000sqft of prime office space combined with 40,000sqft of new shops, restaurants, and cafés.
With a strong focus on sustainability the project is targeting BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ , WELL ‘Platinum’ and NABERS 5* ratings. The project is also designed to meet Grosvenor's targets for sustainable design, material specification, circular economy, and embodied carbon.

This is Data Structure, a 45-foot tall digital sculpture that brings data to life at UVA's School of Data Science.
This piece transforms the fundamental building block of data science—the array—into an architectural-scale light sculpture. What makes it special is that it’s powered by real datasets from the school's community, turning their research and work into mesmerizing numerical patterns of light.
This is one of those projects where all of the pieces aligned to create something amazing. the school's mission of collaborative data science, the minimal, open architecture of Hopkins new building, and our shared vision of making data tangible and emotionally resonant. Each lantern in the sculpture represents a single data point, creating a cascade of light that tells stories through data visualization.
This is a living sculpture that grows with the community. Students and faculty can submit their datasets to see their work transformed into a stunning light display that everyone can experience and understand viscerally.
Thanks to The School of Data Science—including Philip Bourne, Arlyn Burgess, Emma Candelier, Alexander Gates, Raleigh Roussos, and more—for your vision and your belief in art as a central piece of your mission. Thanks to Cody Huff for all your efforts documenting the building and sculpture.
Big shout out to the team that brought this artwork to life, through countless insights and unwavering attention to detail along the way. Sosolimited: Yaxuan Liu (both Lead Designer & Producer), Anna Garbier. Our design & fabrication partner Hypersonic Art & Design: Bill Washabaugh, Alexander Garcia, Perry Naseck.
