We were joined by Everton Director, Colin Chong and Director at Laing O'Rourke Tom Higgins to discuss the new Everton Stadium at Bramley Moore Dock. The discussion focused around the infrastructure and regeneration of the new stadium, transportation throughout the city, and the plans to drive the local economy. A fresh impact assessment from High Streets UK, covered in The Times, has found that businesses operating on flagship high streets are 5.1x more likely to be subject to the Government’s new ‘super tax’ business rates multiplier than anywhere else in the UK. The measure could lead to 200 stores closures and risk inflationary price increases for consumers. Not just that, up to 5,500 jobs could be on the line, should the proposed reforms go ahead. We welcome the Government’s ambition to create a fairer business rates system, and agree with the principle that smaller businesses need a permanent reduction. However, we urge the Chancellor to rethink parts of her plans, to ensure larger properties operating on flagship high streets aren’t hit with a disproportionate rates bill and put at risk. After all, it is often the larger retail, leisure and hospitality units that drive footfall and spend, with a positive halo impact for all businesses, no matter the size. Flagship high streets are more than just bricks and mortar - they are economic and social anchors for our cities, creating jobs, driving local and national growth, and serving as vital hubs for communities.
