We are working towards a fairer, greener, healthier and more economically sound future for all in Lewisham.

About us

Lewisham is a vibrant and culturally diverse borough. This reflected in all aspects of daily life, from the response to the pandemic where the community rallied to support our most vulnerable residents, to the 170 languages spoken in our homes, schools and businesses. We have a rich history of welcoming people from all over the world and are proud to be recognised as the UK’s first Borough of Sanctuary, for our work in championing the rights of refugees and migrants. As we plan ahead, we are working towards a fairer, greener, healthier and more economically sound future for all in Lewisham. This means continuing our efforts to tackle climate change for generations to come; ensuring that good health and wellbeing is equally accessible to everyone; and safeguarding local jobs and up-skilling residents with tools they need to succeed. Building on the community spirit and activism that has been so prevalent in recent years, we are committed to creating a Future Lewisham we can all have a part in.

  • Today, we welcomed Tom Copley, Deputy Mayor for Housing and Residential Development, to the borough to tour three key sites – Walsham House, Winslade Estate and Achilles Street Estate Regeneration. With the housing crisis and so many people on the housing waiting list, it was great to be able to show how Lewisham Council is building council owned homes for social rent and new space for businesses, and discuss how we can work with the Greater London Authority to bring some of our plans forward. Unlocking talent, delivering better.

🏛️Great to be invited on behalf of Lewisham Council to attend Parliament for the APPG for London and its meeting on House building. I managed to speak to the Chair Florence Eshalomi and Jules Pipe Deputy Mayor for Regeneration Greater London Authority about how we can streamline s106 legal agreements, creating confidence and synergy across London for Planning Authorities, Developers and Communities. 🏡London’s local authorities, like Lewisham, stand ready to build the homes London needs. It’s our hope this APPG can remove the blockers and help the builders deliver London Councils

  • Yesterday we were joined at our civic suite by partners across the borough committed to supporting residents to access employment for our ‘Get Lewisham Working’ event, hearing more about how the ‘get Britain working’ white paper could change the way we support people here in Lewisham. There was a shared energy for providing services which adapt and flex to what our residents need and want, and creating a system which builds trust and confidence in public services. With so much national focus on supporting people into work, it was a great opportunity to reflect on how public services and partners work together differently in the years ahead and build programmes which truly ‘hide the wiring’ of the system and help people where they are. In particular it was great to be joined by health colleagues, recognising that supporting people’s health and wellbeing are central to supporting people back into work.   Thanks to all our speakers and panellists, and to everyone who contributed to the discussions.
