The operations of these 4️⃣ major value chains are currently driving more than 90% of man-made pressure on biodiversity: 🍔 Food ⚡ Energy 🏗️ Infrastructure  👗 Fashion 📜 It’s clear that businesses have an enormous impact on nature - for this reason, the Global Biodiversity Framework recognised the importance of business action in halting and reversing nature loss by 2030. ⛓️ To help inform sectoral approaches, Business for Nature, the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, and the World Economic Forum have created new guidance on the sector-specific actions companies can take to transform their operations and value chains. ❔ Why is a sectoral approach needed? 🏞️ It can address the impacts and dependencies that different parts of the economy have on nature and biodiversity. 💡 For each sector, high-level actions have been listed that all businesses can take. 💡 Resource Highlight: MSCI Research into Biodiversity Funds 🌳 Recently, MSCI identified 149 funds around the world that were thematically linked to biodiversity based on the fund name and investment strategy. 💰 These funds collectively held approximately USD 60 billion, or around 2%, of the estimated USD 3 trillion invested in sustainable funds as of September 2023. 🪙 MSCI Research has estimated approximately USD 1 billion invested across 15 biodiversity-labelled funds globally as of Q3 2023. 💲 A larger share of USD 59 billion was invested across 134 biodiversity-related funds. 🔽 Furthermore, according to MSCI Inc., in recent years, biodiversity-labelled funds have, on average, delivered lower risk-adjusted returns versus their peers in the same thematic sphere. 🟧 Using their Sustainable Impact Metrics, they also found that funds that contained the term “biodiversity” in the name exhibited, on average, twice the sustainable-impact-solutions revenue exposure as their biodiversity-related counterparts. 🌱 These funds had more exposure to companies that derive revenue from products or services with a positive impact on society and the environment and revenue tied to natural capital and climate change themes.
