What do many of our Bump to Business Owner guests have in common? As the founders of Nugget Savings pointed out on this week’s episode, being a mother isn’t the problem—it’s the structures that we have to navigate that we are struggling with. Huge thanks to Katie Guild and Harriet M. for our conversation, out this morning. Women, mums, and pre-mums need to support each other and work together for a fairer deal for everyone. We explored: 👉Tips for mat leave negotiation 👉Changing attitudes of and to women and motherhood in employment 👉How they grew their social platforms to 100k within a year of launch 👉How they deal with online misogyny 👉What brings them joy If you’re planning a pregnancy, preparing for mat leave, or know someone who is, please listen to and share this episode. It’s SUCH an important conversation, with so much great practical advice.

On a mission to transform parental leave pay in the UK 💪

Recently I’ve been reflecting a lot on how *negative* the chat can be around being a working parent or a new mum on maternity leave. I’m more and more conscious of trying to balance the endless barrage of depressing stats and stories with good news. 🗞️ Because there *are* fabulous employers who are putting a lot of time, care and cash behind their employees who are expecting a child or navigating their first years of parenthood. Whilst it’s true that statutory maternity pay 💰 is pitiful in the U.K. - it is also true that two thirds of employers offer enhanced maternity pay. There are more opportunities for flexible working than ever (not enough, but we should acknowledge the progress that has been made! 💪) and we’re seeing more and more understanding and policy around fertility treatment. Paternity leaves are being extended. Progress is happening 👏 Whilst employees can be great drivers for this change - HR leaders are often the key 🔑 to really transforming company policy on parental leave. We talk to a lot of fantastic ‘people’ people in our community who are so passionate about supporting working parents in their workplace and are tirelessly advocating for them to the c-suite. If you’re an HR leader and this sounds like you - let us support YOU! Join us for a free event with Hera Voice to learn how to better support working parents. You'll hear from experts at Papier and Flexa, and we'll share valuable insights from Nuggbase, the UK's largest database on parental leave policies. 🗓️ Date: Monday, September 23rd  ⏰ Time: 4:30 PM 🗺️ Location: London 🤩 Bonus: You'll receive an exclusive E-Toolkit packed with insights, case studies, and resources to help you get started! Having children comes at a cost. Quite literally. And according to MoneyHelper a baby can cost up to £7200 in their first year alone. This figure actually excludes childcare which we already know to be stomach churningly expensive, and as someone who has paid an eye-watering amount of money for 2.5 days' worth of nursery care for the last 6 years, I wish I knew then, what I know now. 🔮 That there is SO much more that can be done to get ready for a new arrival other than the buying of a car seat, baby grows, nappies and all the other newborn items that might spring to mind. Preparing for a baby starts with proper financial planning and in my opinion, employers can and should be doing much, much more to support their teams with financial planning for parenthood. 📍Get in touch with experts like Nugget Savings who offer financial wellness programs that give workshops to employees on how to budget, plan and save for parenthood 📍Make sure your parental leave policies reduce the financial strain that having a baby can bring in the early months 📍Provide flexible working arrangements to help offset even just a small amount the huge cost that goes hand in hand with childcare (i.e. later/earlier start and finish times to avoid someone having to pay for breakfast/afterschool clubs) 📍Allow for a phased return to work that includes part-time options. Working adjusted hours allows employees to come back to work sooner but on a reduced hours basis, to ease any financial pressure building Being a working parent has never been so hard and we need to do more to encourage family flexible policies. Which is exactly why we have teamed up with the experts in this space, Nugget Savings to bring together People/HR leaders in London, on Monday 23rd September, to hear from experts and learn how we as a collective, can do better to support parents to thrive in their careers.   If you're in a senior HR/People role, and you'd like to come along, here is the link to register - https://lu.ma/2rttmc1x    We'll be hearing from Nugget Savings themselves as well as Christine Mulryne from Flexa and Claire Hunter from Papier and there will be a tonne of takeaways to help you support your working parents.

This is a huge *pinch* me moment for Harriet M. and I - as Nugget Savings have partnered with Times Money Mentor to talk about all things PENSIONS! 💰 I’ve been reading The Times since I was 15, and have had them on a vision board of dream brand partners since we started Nugget Savings. This couldn’t be a more perfect partnership. We’re kind of obsessed with talking about pensions at Nugget, because the pension gap really begins with maternity leave & the subsequent care journey lots of women embark on. I have been using Times Money Mentor ‘s excellent ‘Mind the Gap! How to close the pension gender gap’ article to create videos for Nugget - particularly highlighting the fantastic suggestion that partners can pay into your pension whilst you are on maternity leave so you aren’t penalized for having a baby. So when the opportunity came to get involved in their amazing FREE four-week challenge to supercharge your pension it could not have been a more natural match. Harriet M. and I have loved getting to grips with our pension. For me, after 7 years of self employment and *whisper it* not contributing anything into a pension 😮💨it was a chance to hit the reset button and pull my head out of the sand. If you feel behind, or you’re starting at zero, or you just want to get more pension savvy - we really can’t recommend this course enough. Jump into week one now & sign up here to get involved! AD/ although this post was not required as part of the partnership - I’m just bloomin’ over the moon to be working with them! 💪 Sign up! 👉 https://lnkd.in/ebdswfk9

This is my almost 5 year old son Jesse.   He's what many would call an 'angel child'.   As far as kids go, he's very easy!   He's sleeps through the night, and has done since he was 4 weeks old.   He's kind, caring, gentle and calm.   He has no health concerns or conditions.   At this point, I would consider him to be neurotypical.   We've been fortunate enough to be able to afford almost full time childcare since he was 12 months, in the absence of any family members who would be able to help.   My husband has a supportive boss and a company who allow him to do 2 days of drop offs and pick ups each week (shout out to Balfour Beatty plc ) and I do the other 3.   I've been fortunate enough to work in a hybrid model since he was 12 months old, only needing to be in the office 2 days a week (however I'm now fully remote).   Safe to say, we've had it pretty good. And we count our blessings for this everyday.   But what about all the parents who don't have it this easy? i.e MOST PARENTS!   - Those with multiple children to juggle - Those with children who have physical disabilities - Those with children with health conditions - Those with children who are neurodiverse - Those who struggle to afford the astronomical childcare costs - Those who work shifts or struggle to find any form of flexibility from work - Those with children who wake multiple times a night - lack of sleep is no joke. - Those with children with SEN - I could go on....   Parenting is hard. Parenting whilst trying to hold down and career, let alone thrive in your career is even harder.   Can we do more to support parents? YES   Many companies are smashing their family friendly policies and initiatives, but most still have work to do.   Which is why we have teamed up with Nugget Savings to bring together People/HR leaders in London, on Monday 23rd September, to hear from experts and learn how we as a collective, can do better to support parents to thrive in their careers.   If you're in a senior HR/People role, and you'd like to come along, here is the link to register - https://lu.ma/2rttmc1x    We'll be hearing from Nugget Savings, Flexa and Papier and they'll be a tonne of takeaways to help you, help your people!

On a mission to transform parental leave pay in the UK 💪

How do you have a baby and keep a business alive? 🤷♀️ I was not prepared for how hard this would be on my first maternity leave. The stress of being self employed with a new baby resulted in: 👉 Delayed post-partum depression & burnout 👉 Closing my business of 6 years down 👉 Pivoting to set up Nugget Savings and becoming OBSESSED with talking about parental leave This is what lit the fire 🔥 in my belly to transform parental leave in the UK. This is my 'why' for Nugget Savings. We ram our content full of education and tips and tricks I *wish* I knew about parental leave before my first baby. Whilst there's been plenty to say for the employed - lots of protections shine a light on, 'hacks' for holiday, tips for increasing maternity pay... when it's come to the self-employed we've been a bit scant of advice 🫣 So a couple of months ago I asked LinkedIn - how do you have a baby if you're self-employed?! What's the magic trick? 🧚♀️ A ton of comments flew in - lots tagging the wonderful Frankie Tortora from Doing It For The Kids - recommending her podcast & community as a wonderful resource for self-employed parents. So a collab was born! If you're self-employed and thinking of having a baby / are pregnant, join the masterclass I wish was available when I was pregnant with my first baby! 🐣 This Thursday @ 7.30pm. Today is the last day for early bird tickets 🎟 We'll be talking about: -Essential things to do before taking leave & how to maximise your income before & during -How mat leave and pay differs for sole traders vs limited companies -How to keep your business ticking over while you’re not working -KIT Days: How many you have available and how you can use them - How working on MA affects your mat pay - Claiming child benefit & UC whilst on mat leave whilst self employed - How self-employment works with childcare schemes And share any tips you have in the comments! https://lnkd.in/extA5XCP

'Anyone else disappointed that nap breaks aren’t considered a “reasonable adjustment”?' 💤🛏️ This was a comment we got on the video below when we posted it on social media! Did you know once you have informed your employer in writing that you are pregnant they must carry out an individual risk assessment? 🤰✍️ If there are any risks, they have to make reasonable adjustments to remove them. We asked the Nugget Savings community what reasonable adjustments had been made for them during their pregnancy. We got hundreds of responses, but here are some of our favourite ones: 🚗 Ensuring a space in the car park close to the office ⬇️ Reduced their hours to 30 hours per week when they had morning sickness but kept full-time pay 🏡 Whilst working from home they started calls at 5 mins past the hour and ending 5 mins to the hour to give them a 10 min break between meetings. 🏠 Bought a sit/stand desk for working from home 👟 Allowed to wear trainers 🍏 Teachers being taken off break duty 🐶 Ensuring the office dogs were kept with owners so they wouldn’t trip What reasonable adjustments were made whilst you were pregnant? ❓
