Making communications work for everyone

About us

Ofcom is the UK's communications regulator. We make sure people get the best from their home phone and mobile services, as well as keeping an eye on TV, radio and on-demand content. We also ensure people don’t get scammed and are protected from bad practice. We also oversee the universal postal service, and the airwaves used by wireless devices. Right now, technology is changing how people work, interact and enjoy themselves. Much of our work is focused on making sure everybody has access to the communications technology they need and that competition can thrive.

Four major online services have committed to promoting media literacy to their users - helping them navigate the online world safely and effectively. Google Search, the LEGO Group, Pinterest and Roblox have become the first online services to pledge to adopt Ofcom's best practice principles for promoting media literacy. These principles have been developed with a wide range of experts and by signing up to these, the companies have pledged to: 1. Prioritise media literacy and increase transparency. 2. Focus on user-centric design. 3. Continuously monitor and evaluate media literacy efforts. We were at The Times Tech Summit today, where our CEO Melanie Dawes spoke with Sarah Cardell from Competition and Markets Authority and Dominic O'Connell from Times Radio about our role as online safety regulator, misinformation on social media, and regulation in the era of AI. As of today, UK customers will be better protected against surprise mobile roaming charges at home and abroad. 📱🌴 Our new rules require UK mobile companies to provide tailored, transparent and accessible information when customers start roaming. This enables people to make informed decisions about whether – and how – to use their mobile phone abroad. This will also include alerts if a customer is inadvertently roaming or in areas more prone to this.

Last Thursday, Ofcom Advisory Committee for Scotland held their quarterly meeting at the Scotland 5G Centre Dundee Hub at James Hutton Institute. This meeting was part of the committee's ongoing initiative to host sessions at external locations and engage more directly with key stakeholders from the broadcasting, telecommunications and online safety sectors. 🚜 The visit featured a tour of the Dundee Hub and an outdoor demonstration of an autonomous tractor by Andrew Christie, Agri-Tech specialist from The James Hutton Institute at Mylnfield test farm showcasing cutting-edge technology in precision farming. Several presentations and discussions took place too, including an exploration of the Agri-robotics platform operating within a 5G network environment. This was a fantastic opportunity to highlight the collaborative efforts between the Centre and JHI to drive innovation in agritech, and to discuss future plans supporting the growth of the farming sector. 👏 Thank you to the Ofcom Advisory Committee for choosing our hub to host their meeting and for their support and participation in helping to shape the future of agritech and farming innovation. #agritech #5GInnovation #OfcomAdvisoryCommitteeforScotland

Today marks 50 years since the launch of Ceefax, the world’s first teletext service! 📺 It delivered everything from news headlines to sports scores and weather updates. Ceefax also provided vital subtitles for deaf people, helping make TV more accessible. It ran until 2012 when the UK moved from analogue to digital TV, by which time the information it provided was widely available to people online. Check out some of our colleagues use it again after many years, or try it for the first time ever! Full video available on YouTube. 📽️ https://lnkd.in/egQ6iVNk Find out more about Ceefax here 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eqif9Exx
