The quest for net zero on an epic scale – developing one of the largest floating offshore wind farms in the world
About us
Ossian (pronounced ‘os-si-un’) from The Poems of Ossian is a proposed offshore wind farm located in waters off the east coast of Scotland. On completion it will be one of the largest floating offshore wind farms in the world, producing up to 3.6GW of renewable energy – enough to power up to 6 million* homes annually. Occupying 858km² of seabed 84km off the east coast of Scotland, Ossian is one of the largest lease areas to be offered by Crown Estate Scotland to any bidder in the ScotWind leasing round. Ossian represents a new tradition in power generation. Its scale and floating technology make it a game changer in the UK renewable energy sector and a critical driving force behind our journey to net zero. It will offset up to 7.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions each year and will provide a significant proportion of the renewable energy capacity we need to meet Scottish and UK government ambitions. Ossian is a joint venture between: o SSE Renewables Limited - a leading developer, owner and operator of renewable energy projects and assets across the UK and Ireland o Marubeni Corporation - a Japanese integrated trading and investment business with extensive interests in power generation and renewable energy o Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners - a fund management company specialising in tailor-made investments in energy infrastructure assets globally within the renewables and greenfield sectors This powerful partnership brings together the extensive local knowledge, world leading technology and global expertise needed to deliver significant and enduring social, economic and decarbonisation benefits. * Based on Typical Domestic Consumption Values (Medium Electricity Profile Class 1, 2,900kWh/household; OFGEM, Jun 2021), typical 50% projected wind load factor, projected installed capacity of 3,600MW. 7.5m tonnes of CO2 reductions/annum based on expected annual output against average 440 tonnes CO2 per GWh for all non-renewable fuels, Aug 2021

As part of ongoing data gathering, we worked alongside the Geowynd lab in Southampton, to help understand our site’s seabed conditions. 🔬 It performed a wide range of tests including: ✔ Monotonic Triaxial & Direct Simple Shear ✔ Cyclic Triaxial & Direct Simple Shear ✔ Resonant Column, and many more! David H., our offshore geotechnical engineer said: "Ossian is pleased to support new UK geotechnical lab capability and capacity as it is already very much in demand and will only be needed more as the Offshore Wind Industry accelerates towards our Net Zero goals." #OssianWindFarm #DataGathering #RenewableEnergy

“The Ossian team has been working with NIRAS and SPEA to develop a long-term plan to reduce bycatch of Northern gannet in Portuguese fisheries, building on previous work completed by SPEA over the last 13 years. 📝 Last week our offshore consents manager, Fraser Malcolm, attended the 16th International Seabird Conference at Coimbra University in Portugal. SPEA and Niras, in collaboration with Ossian, presented findings on bycatch monitoring and how mitigation could be used to support the application for the Ossian wind farm. 🐦 Full details of the Compensation measures and the wider Derogation Case can be read here: https://lnkd.in/ehcEgwxg #OssianWindFarm #RenewableEnergy #ResearchStudy”

At Ossian, we're not just interested in what is on top of the seabed, but also what lies beneath it. 🌊 In our blog with geotechnical lead, David H., and geophysical leader, Roger Birchall, they explain how geo surveys work together to help us design a floating offshore wind farm. ⚙️ Read more: https://lnkd.in/ebuqew2e #OssianWindFarm #WindFarm #FloatingWindFarm

The data provided by the Geowynd lab in Southampton will, along with our other offshore data, form the basis of our understanding of our site’s seabed conditions and thus is of critical importance as we progress feasibility and design works for the project. Having a good fundamental understanding of the soil properties is of particular importance to Floating Offshore Wind given the many options and relative uncertainty in other facets of the technology and investing in this early has been a key part of Ossian’s strategy to progress our project and the FOW sector as a whole. #OssianWindFarm #RenewableEnergy
📢Geowynd delivers advanced #geotechnical lab testing scope for one of the world's 🌍 largest planned floating offshore wind farms🍃🌬. The Ossian Wind Farm development is situated off the east coast of Scotland and has a total area of 858 km2 ( 3x the size of Edinburgh), with the potential to deliver up to 3.6GW of capacity. Geowynd performed a wide range of tests, which will be used for the design of the floating turbine anchors, including: ◼ Monotonic Triaxial & Direct Simple Shear✔ ◼ Cyclic Triaxial & Direct Simple Shear✔ ◼ Resonant Column✔ ◼ Consolidation✔ ◼ Permeability✔ ◼ Thixotropy✔ Testing was carried out at our newly developed advanced lab🔬 premises in #Southampton📍. The project showcases our capacity to deliver timely high-quality📊📅 lab data for offshore wind projects🍃🌬. David H. an Offshore #Geotechnical Engineer at Ossian Wind Farm stated: 📢"Ossian is pleased to support new UK geotechnical lab capability and capacity as it is already very much in demand and will only be needed more as the Offshore Wind Industry accelerates towards our Net Zero goals." Big thanks to our talented team💪for their great work and the collaboration 🤝 with Ossian Wind Farm.
