PLP Architecture
Architecture and Planning
A global architecture and urban design studio focused on research, sustainability, and innovation practices
About us
PLP Architecture is a London-based group of architects, designers and thinkers who value the transformative role of ideas and the capacity for architecture to inspire. Although we draw from a rich history and experience of working together on projects around the world, we have a culture of a young start-up. We value innovation and creativity as we strive to test limits. We produce intelligent, exciting and groundbreaking designs through a continual commitment to social, economic and environmental ideals. The office shuns preconceptions, fixed architectural styles or methods, allowing each project to become a unique opportunity to research, analyze and creatively respond to the brief, site and context. The foundation of our work lies in a commitment to the quality of life in the city, a delight in the handling of material, space and light and an optimism about architecture’s potential to enrich our society. We have a global presence, with permanent studios in London, Tokyo and Singapore. PLP Architecture is also supported by our research and innovation group, PLP Labs. A tale of London old and new is currently being told in form of Harold Offeh’s recently unveiled artwork ‘Intersections’, at our Holborn Viaduct site. Spanning over 100 meters in length, its narrative speaks of the site’s ancient history, items unearthed during our recent excavation, personal stories and local folklore. Jasen Kok, our Southeast Asia Business Development Lead, was in Manila last week, speaking to audiences about the importance of Circular Design and the ways in which PLP is embedding these ideas into our work in the region and globally. Hosted by His Majesty’s Government and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the event aimed to promote sustainable, climate-resilient development practices. Jasen K. highlighted how PLP’s research-driven approach to design can help pave the way to a greater adoption of circular principles in the region, and shared PLP Labs’ work in exploring bio-based materials, such as mycelium blocks and structural timber for high-rise applications.

“We have to start at the beginning. We have to bring everyone along for the ride and we have to make sure these strategies are embedded in our design, in our documentation, and then we can’t lose them. We don’t miss the opportunities if we make sure they’re there at the start.” Amy Holtz, Director at PLP, spoke at our Scaling Circularity event about how integrating circular design into a building is a team effort. She highlighted how, in today’s built environment, we have a lot more stakeholders to consult and bring on the circularity journey. Everyone needs to buy in on costs, warranties, risks and aesthetics. How do we do this? By starting early and ensuring that initiatives are considered from concept to completion – and beyond. Arbor, PLP's first completed building as part of the Bankside Yards masterplan, is integrated into a fifth-generation low-temperature energy network that spans a total area of 5.5 hectares. This is the term used to describe heating networks at a very low temperature level, which are connected to decentralised heat pumps in buildings and raised to the required flow temperature of the heating system. PLP Partner Daniel Moore explains: "Technically speaking, Arbor’s façade has been extremely successful and delivers exceptional performance. However, I’d say where it really excels is in the experiential effect it creates for anyone in the building. Over time, we will be able to see this having a notably positive effect on occupants’ health, wellbeing and creativity." AGC Glass Europe
💙 Arbor, Bankside Yards, London: a sustainable and ultra-modern office building that promotes meaningful and productive interaction between people rather than just providing space to work! 👉Daniel Moore, Architect and Partner at PLP Architecture, tells us more on https://lnkd.in/e-98pd8e ⬜ "The large 3-by-3-metre glazed panels bring in huge amounts of natural light and frame incredible views over London on all sides of Arbor. They’re of such a scale and clarity that you can’t be in the building and not feel the ‘wow-effect’. Over time, we will be able to see this having a notably positive effect on occupants’ health, wellbeing and creativity." 🍃Arbor achieved the "BREEAM Excellent" certificate. ✅The closed cavity façade is a central part of the concept, which aims to utilise daylight and achieve excellent energy efficiency: The inner shell is formed by a double thermal insulation iplus 1.0 glazing, the outer skin by a thin laminated safety glass unit made of low-iron Clearvision glass. The multi-faceted artwork 'Intersections' by Harold Offeh, at our Holborn Viaduct site, captures the rich history of the area, whilst weaving together stories with local context. Celebrating the launch of Futurecity's Cultural Plan for this prominent site, we are excited to finally see these works brought into the public realm. 🎨
Thank you to artist Harold Offeh and the collaborative team that helped make ‘Intersections’ possible - including Royal London Asset Management, Avison Young │ UK, Hogan Lovells, PLP Architecture, Multiplex, London Museum, MOLA Museum of London Archaeology, HATO PRESS LTD, Fleet Street Quarter, and 12 local community members. Kicking-off the delivery of Futurecity’s Cultural Plan for #HolbornViaduct, the project’s approach to co-design, which brought together cultural, commercial and community partners, illustrates the value of culture-led placemaking at the earliest stages in design. Co-design workshops with local residents unlocked important discussions around the site’s history and heritage, from trade to queer history, and the role of Holborn Viaduct in the Square Mile’s cultural ecosystem. Futurecity has always placed social value central to our cultural placemaking strategies, recognising the role arts and culture can have in connecting to communities, residents and visitors and establishing clear and authentic place offers. Our projects unlock funding for the arts, create new facilities, increase access and support for artists, communities and cultural organisations. A special thank you to the workshop team: Wendy Andrade, Paul Lincoln, AZ, Deanna V’Icevska, Rara Reines, Ana Aguirre, Tallulah Griffith, Greygory Vass, Sukhin Tye, Natasha Gicuhi, Concetta Conigliario, Chika Afam as well as Patrick Thomas and Hato Press, who supported the workshops. #publicart #culturalplacemaking #culturalheritage #HolbornViaduct #CityofLondon #DestinationCity #SquareMile #contemporaryart Video: James William Marshall

Don’t miss Deepthi Ravi speaking on the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC)’s webinar ‘Advancing Net Zero: Essential Knowledge Series’ at 09:30 tomorrow morning. Deepthi, PLP’s Sustainability Coordinator, will be sharing her experience of designing sustainability strategies for our winning proposal for the National Meteorological Centre, which will be the Korean government’s first net-zero building. The six-part webinar series aims to build core net zero knowledge through exploring key concepts, ideas and solutions needed to reach carbon targets across our built environment. This year, the focus is on public buildings, and how they can be designed, built, retrofitted, operated, and maintained to achieve net zero. Sign up here: https://lnkd.in/eEs_bR4r

“There is no pink unicorn, there is no magic bullet. It takes this kind of knowledge exchange and a lot of small innovations and disruptions to be able to make the massive disruption that is needed to move us to a circular economy.” – Dr Robert Schmidt III, Loughborough University. We were delighted to have Rob as moderator for Scaling Circularity, a discussion exploring how innovations in circular design can be implemented at all scales, from individual products to city-wide strategies. The event, hosted in our London studio as part of ReLondon’s Circular Economy Week, featured an inspiring panel of speakers including Ron Bakker, Midori Ainoura, Amy Holtz, Marta González Ruiz, Michael Polisano, and Deepthi Ravi.
