A huge thank you to Athelstan Primary for welcoming us to their Careers Day this week! It was a fantastic opportunity to engage with their pupils and introduce them to the world of architecture. Jacob Peplow and Kirsty Pearson led fun-packed 20-minute sessions with three classes, featuring an interactive "Guess My Job" activity and a creative draw-along exercise, where students produced their own architectural drawings. The challenge? Redesign the perfect classroom—a space for work, rest, and play. Together, we explored ideas that would help them feel safe, supported, and inspired to learn. The enthusiasm and creativity in the room were incredible, and we wrapped up with some brilliant and insightful questions from the pupils. As part of our commitment to See it Be it in Sheffield, a brilliant initiative connecting young people with employers to expand their career aspirations and future chances, we’re excited to continue our outreach at Astrea Academy and Wisewood Primary School very soon. We can't wait to meet the next group of future architects and designers! #SeeItBeItSheffield #CareersDay #InspiringFutureArchitects #EducationMatters #Architecture #SocialValue

We are incredibly proud to show our support for three amazing members of our team, Jacob Peplow, Charlie Fletcher and Barnaby Miles who are taking part in the Sheffield Half Marathon on Sunday the 23rd of March with Jacob running to raise money for Epilepsy Research Institute UK. Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological conditions in the world, with about 1 in 100 people in the UK diagnosed with the condition. The Epilepsy Research Institute’s mission is to radically advance research into the causes, prevention and treatment of epilepsy and its associated conditions. Race Cottam Associates is always keen to encourage and support our team in everything they do, and the Sheffield half marathon is a great way for us to come together with the local community for a good cause. With a city centre start and finish, a huge crowd of enthusiastic supporters will cheer runners from beginning to end. Anybody who would like to donate please do so by going to their JustGiving page and by sharing this post. Thank you. https://lnkd.in/ejG9bcZ5 #SheffieldMarathon #Charity #EpilepsyResearchInstituteUK #JustGiving

At Race Cottam Associates, our five Steering Groups drive continuous improvement across key areas such as Design, Delivery, BIM, Sustainability, and Principal Designer. Over two-thirds of our team actively participate in these groups, dedicating their time, sharing their knowledge, and demonstrating their commitment to driving best practices across the office. This month, we spotlight our Design Steering Group, led by Associate Jessica Wilkinson, as they conduct an early-stage Design Review for a school project. Alongside Jess, the team includes Laurie Cottam, David Speddings, Jacob Peplow, Amy Paget, and Keating Walters, who bring diverse design expertise, presentation skills, and architectural passions to the group. From model-making workshops and life drawing classes to organising our Lead Designer Toolbox Talk series and visiting buildings (whether as far afield as Amsterdam or more local sites like next week’s trip to Leah’s Yard), the team encourages us to step away from our screens, pick up a pen, and remember the power of a sketch! Their mission? To elevate design quality, creativity, collaboration, and consistency while staying true to RCA’s design philosophy. #DesignLeadership #Innovation #Collaboration #Architecture #ContinualImprovement #DesignSteeringGroup #RaisingAspirations #DesignInspiration

This week, as part of our process showcase, we're peering over the shoulder of Nick Stables, Senior Architectural Technologist, as he refines the details of the timber batten wall cladding in the BIM model for the new atrium at the Institute of Technology Barnsley College. In collaboration with G F Tomlinson, the existing college courtyard is being transformed with a new roof, creating a fully enclosed atrium. This space will house a Learning Resource Centre with tiered mezzanine floors, connecting to specialist IoT teaching facilities while also offering bespoke areas for flexible and collaborative learning. The latest site photographs reveal how the space is taking shape, and we can’t wait to share the finished results and see the space being enjoyed by the college’s staff and students. Exciting to see the first steelwork going up to construct the new Belper Health Centre on the site of the former clinic at Babington Hospital. The event marks a key stage in the development of the new health facilities for residents of Belper and the surrounding area. We are proud to have designed this building from inception for Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust and to now be working with Henry Brothers Ltd to deliver the building. We can’t wait to see the full structure erected and share how the building negotiates the site’s very steep topography!!! It was great to see Pauline Lake from Race Cottam Associates join Rebecca Roffe and Rachel Gunns MRICS on the panel at this morning's Sheffield Property Association event. A big thank you to Christie Smith and Heather Williams for organising such a valuable discussion, where insights were shared and the importance of sustainability in our built environment was emphasised. #Sustainability #BuiltEnvironment #FutureGenerations #Aspire #Retrofit #SheffieldProperty #InspireTheNextGeneration
This morning we hosted our ‘Sustainability in the built environment’ event at CMS UK. Thank you to Christie Smith, who leads our Aspire priority group for early careers, for hosting a brilliant panel discussion with Rebecca Roffe, Pauline Lake and Rachel Gunns MRICS who all provided great insights into the importance of sustainability and exploring how it shapes careers and urban development. Today we highlighted the encouraging rise in sustainability awareness, as more individuals and organisations are showing a willingness to reduce their carbon footprints and choose sustainable options that benefit both the environment and personal wellbeing. Events like this demonstrate the inspiring number of people, including those early in their careers, who are actively engaged in sustainability. No matter your industry, we welcome your insights about sustainable options and ideas for improving our city's development initiatives. At the S-PA, our Protecting our Future group provides a platform for you to collaborate with other businesses and exchange insights to make a real difference in our city.
