20 years ago today I started work with Sandy Brown, what I consider to be the best acoustics firm in the UK. I certainly don't look like I did then anymore, but Sandy Brown has gone from strength to strength, and I am grateful and humbled they took a chance on me all those years ago.
The RIAS Awards 2025 shortlist has been announced and includes Sandy Brown project, The Nucleus Building at The University of Edinburgh. At the heart of The University of Edinburgh's King's Building Campus, The Nucleus Building provides shared learning, teaching and social facilities. We provided advice to optimise sound insulation and reverberation throughout the building's various spaces, including between its vertically stacked lecture theatres, using 3D modelling to support our acoustic specifications. The Chancery House project is one we have been involved with over several years, advising on acoustics through design and construction. Refurbishment projects are often challenging acoustically, though through careful design, it is possible to retain a building’s character sustainably, while enhancing its performance. This project is a great example of how workplaces can be both functional, and future conscious.
Chancery House for The Office Group / Fora has been shortlisted for a prestigious RIBA London Award 2025. "This is a good day for the reimagined workplace, and for the recognition of retrofit as proper architecture. Designed in collaboration with interior architects Norm, the refurbishment and extension has transformed the dated, dark 150,000 sqft building, opening it up to create a warm, approachable workspace flooded with natural light and packed with amenities including gyms, saunas, a restaurant, meeting rooms, conferencing, break out and multiple gardens, terraces and courtyards." Soho Place features two new mixed-use buildings formed around a new civic plaza as part of Oxford Street’s regeneration and redevelopment of St Giles Circus. This complex, large-scale project required the services of three separate acoustic consultancies, with Sandy Brown retained in a client monitoring role for Derwent London for construction and acoustic testing. The north building provides 33,000 sq ft of retail space across three stories delivered to shell and core, with a further 191,000 sq ft of office accommodation over nine stories delivered to category A fit out. The new Nimax Theatre, Soho Place, is situated in the south building and features a flexible 602 seat auditorium which has received positive critical acclaim since opening its doors in late 2022. Additional facilities included rehearsal spaces, a green room, theatrical workshops, cafés and bars, a restaurant and terrace, plus 18,000 sq ft of office accommodation over three stories. All office spaces targeted, and achieved, BREEAM Excellent. Premier Inn's largest hotel in the North is taking shape at Manchester Airport, with 276 guestrooms across 9 storeys. Sandy Brown have led the acoustic design from RIBA Stage 2 through to tender, as well as input to the planning application, which has now been submitted. The building envelope design has been a key challenge to ensure that noise ingress to guestrooms from aircraft is suitably controlled. The internal sound insulation design has also been important in ensuring that Premier Inn’s brand standards for acoustics are met. We look forward to continuing our work on this project in 2025. The Grade II* listed Rhodes House in Oxford has won the 2024 Architecture MasterPrize for Best Restoration & Renovation and the 2024 World Architecture Festival award in the Completed Buildings: Retrofit category, recognising its exceptional architectural quality. Sandy Brown worked closely with Stanton Williams Architects to ensure that the acoustic requirements were integrated within the architectural design. The preservation of the building’s historic features required a detailed approach to acoustic design. Key challenges addressed included controlling external noise ingress, ensuring effective sound insulation between internal spaces and managing reverberation and noise levels in conference spaces, meeting rooms, foyers and open-plan offices. The Peninsula London by The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited is the luxury brand’s first UK hotel. It blends luxurious aesthetics and exquisite acoustic performance. Sandy Brown provided acoustics consulting for the entire project, ensuring that its 216 guestrooms and residences had excellent sound insulation, that its grand ballrooms and state-of-the-art wellness facilities were free from underground train vibration, and its opulent lobby could host events – all to match the hotel’s famed service. Virgin Group's new headquarters at Whitfield Studios is officially open. Sandy Brown helped reimagine the four-storey, 24,000 sq ft studio into a purpose-built office. As part of the design team, we provided acoustic advice from RIBA stages 2-4 and oversaw acoustic commissioning at completion, ensuring high-quality acoustics throughout the space.
