In 2021, SATAVIA was selected for the first cohort of the AviationXLab, an incubator program founded by Emirates, GE Aerospace, Airbus and others. As part of Aviation XLab, SATAVIA received mentoring and support on a proof-of-concept project with #Emirates.    Today, they are working operationally with Etihad, supported by the ADQ Growth Lab. And bringing the story full circle, Aerospace Carbon Solutions, a GE Aerospace business, has #acquired SATAVIA. This is such a #proud moment because GE Aerospace and the #UAE have been an important part of SATAVIA’s journey. It is an excellent example of our focus on home-grown innovation across the #aviationecosystem and shows that this region is very much in focus for #GEAerospace and for the industry at large!

Today, Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) and Canopy (CISL) hosted the Cambridge Wide Open Day - an opportunity to showcase the city’s world-class science and technology cluster. As part of the CISL/Canopy ecosystem, the SATAVIA team and I presented and exhibited at the event, promoting engaging discussions with attendees about contrails, their climate impact and how we can solve the issue as an industry. In case you missed it… ✈ With the aviation sector accounting for around 2.5% of global CO2 emissions, developing smarter and greener practices for airlines and associated industries is both a major challenge and a global imperative. As part of ESA’s Business Applications and Space Solutions programme and supported by the UK Space Agency, UK green aerospace company SATAVIA has successfully completed a Demonstration Project involving contrail management trials with multiple airlines. The atmospheric modelling platform developed in the project has the potential to significantly reduce the impact of air travel on the environment. We are so excited to welcome SATAVIA to the Canopy Community. ✈ SATAVIA applies atmospheric science to reduce aviation’s climate impact, optimising airline flight plans to prevent the formation of warming condensation trails (contrails) with the vision of cutting the sector’s climate impact by over 30%. 👤 Conor Farrington, Chief of Staff at SATAVIA, commented on the new membership: "We joined Canopy because we were searching for a co-working space aligned with our vision of reducing humanity’s climate impact. Space technology is core to SATAVIA's capability to tackle the climate impact caused by aircraft contrails. 🛰️✈️🌿 European Space Agency - ESA’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) programme has backed SATAVIA since 2015, most recently in a project to demonstrate contrail management feasibility with 12 commercial airline operators. We optimised 65 flights over 10 months to mitigate radiative forcing equalling >2,200 tonnes of carbon dioxide (T/CO2e) equivalent at an average of >40T/CO2e per optimised flight. We’re delighted to announce the successful completion of SATAVIA’s latest contrail management trials, conducted with 12 airlines over the past year with European Space Agency - ESA and UK Space Agency support! The trials leveraged atmospheric modelling to optimise flight paths for contrail avoidance – embedding contrail management in routine operations to reduce aviation’s significant non-CO2 climate impacts, as detailed in our press release: https://lnkd.in/dTFFQFaC The real-world impact is substantial: over 10 months, we optimised 65 flights to prevent over 2,200 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent climate impact with minimal impact on flight time and fuel burn (<0.4% delta for medium-haul flights). Working with operators like Condor Flugdienst GmbH and SunExpress, we carried out extensive validation after every flight to verify climate benefit, while also identifying challenges arising from real-world flight trials. This approach built on years of SATAVIA scientific validation activity, shortly to be submitted as a peer-reviewed scientific manuscript (watch this space!) The trials demonstrate the tremendous potential of contrail management as a low-cost climate solution for routine commercial aviation.
