Space to Breathe are looking for people to fill two part-time posts. One is for a two-day week Peer Support Worker and the other is for a 2.5 day/week Carers Support & Wellbeing Worker. 🔹No, Alan, we won’t fix the economy by punishing disabled people🔹 Last week, Alan Milburn gave a keynote speech that I found deeply problematic. Two key takeaways stood out: 1️⃣ Framing economically inactive people as THE main barrier to economic growth. This is a deeply flawed narrative that shifts blame onto those facing systemic barriers, rather than addressing the real structural issues in our economy. 2️⃣ A misleading use of statistics. He cited research from Barnsley claiming “seven in ten economically inactive people would like to work.” But without context, this statistic oversimplifies complex realities—health conditions, caring responsibilities, a lack of inclusive opportunities, and an employment system that often fails disabled people. I've written about this in Now Then Magazine - Opus because we need to challenge these narratives. Blaming those pushed to the margins doesn’t grow the economy—it deepens inequality. The real solutions lie in investing in inclusive employment, co-production, and systemic change that works for everyone. It's been a big few weeks, culminating in the screening of "Social Enterprising the Transitions Ahead" earlier this week. The screening was the first time I'd seen the film (and my section!) and I was honestly just blown away. The contributors, the curation, the story. All of it was outstanding. Thank you so much to Terry Murphy for inviting my to be part of the film, Tim Feben and Jake Barrett for their patience whilst filming, everyone at the Sheffield Social Enterprise Network who supported this project and my fellow contributors; Ola Fagbohun Roz D. The premiere of this film this morning was a truly meaningful event. I expected it to be inspiring and thought provoking, and it was. I didn't expect it to be emotional. Wow - feeling very inspired, proud and excited. This morning I had the pleasure of seeing the launch of Sheffield Social Enterprise Network's documentary Social Enterprising the Transitions Ahead. Terry Murphy beautifully interviews a range of local social enterprises doing powerful work in city: - Putting human needs over profits - Unpicking the complex challenges society faces - Designing new systems for tackling those problems - Empowering communities and fostering belonging - Shifting the narratives around what is possible and how we operate in the world Thank you to all those involved in the film and today's panellists for leaving me with some excellent take aways: - Small changes make big differences - Everything is interconnected, so foster those connections - Find your authentic story - Ubuntu, I am because we are - Do it sweaty (sometimes you have to get started even if the plan isn't polished) I am incredibly moved to see all of the wonderful work happening on our doorstep and excited for this film to be a multiplier of positivity. I'm already thinking about how it can be used to help others interested in grassroots action and systemic change to get started with their own small actions or even start organisations.
