In recent weeks, the UNFCCC warned the world is on track to warm up to 3.1°C, the UN Environment Programme called for global mobilisation to avoid climate catastrophe and the International Energy Agency (IEA) projected we're still going to fall short of the COP28 goal to triple renewable capacity. Our Executive Director for Governments and Policy Champa Patel spoke with the BBC News about: ⭕ Why NDCs are off-track and how short-term priorities are hindering action on our long-term needs. ⭕ What needs to happen at #COP29 in Baku. From how to ensure NDCs are ambitious, to determining access to climate finance and the role of fossil fuels. ⭕ Why we can't lose hope. It's not going to be easy, and it involves trade-offs but it all comes down to the societies and communities we want to live in. The message is clear: It's Time. We can't afford to waste another year. We can’t keep making ambitious commitments but then only half implementing them.

"The Chungnam International Conference on Decarbonisation embodied global cooperation with representatives from national and subnational governments worldwide." In late October, Helen Clarkson and Nehmat Kaur led a Climate Group delegation at the event. #Under2Coalition Asia-Pacific co-chair Chungnam, exemplified how subnational governments can enhance NDC ambition and drive the climate agenda forward by taking action locally. Our Head of Policy and Advocacy, Andrew Forth, reflects on key trends, challenges, and highlights from the conference. https://ow.ly/sky150U3c3k

In this new era, Climate Group’s mission and work grows even more important to ensure US climate action moves forward fast.      Climate Group leads a coalition of state governments, private sector leaders, and international partners committed to driving meaningful progress on climate solutions. Regardless of Federal leadership, we will continue to work with a diverse set of US climate leaders from across the public and private sector to solve the biggest climate challenges today including transportation, heavy industry, health, and IRA implementation, as well as collaborating with Latino and other communities at the forefront of the climate crisis. Climate change is clear and present, and communities across the US are experiencing the impacts of extreme weather events, heatwaves, and sea level rise firsthand. The importance of US climate leadership from the states and private sector can’t be underestimated as the second largest contributor of global emissions. With Baku coming closer, we're proud to release our new policy report Getting to SteelZero: Pathways to Steel Decarbonisation. This #SteelZero report highlights key policy interventions to accelerate global steel decarbonisation, shaping a sustainable future for the industry. It offers a an accessible menu of options for policymakers to pick and choose from and showcases best practice examples such as our member Ørsted's long-term offtake agreement with Dillinger, which will support the supply of lower emission steel for offshore wind foundations and other future uses. Key highlights include: ⭕ Practical pathways for steel decarbonisation, including regulatory reforms, green procurement strategies, and the creation of market incentives to reduce emissions from steel production. ⭕ Insight into the power of collaboration and the role of governments in shaping market dynamics to foster a low-carbon future. ⭕ A focus on the urgent need for clear, consistent environmental data standards and the alignment of policy with market forces to unlock the investments necessary for change. We're actively engaging with governments and businesses across sectors to align our efforts with the leadership shown by SteelZero members. Together, we're pushing to make steel decarbonisation a global priority. Have a read here: https://lnkd.in/e_nBsDdM
