Thought For Thursday – the difference a year makes It was a strange feeling seeing so many posts over the last week about International Confex. This time last year, I’d had a fantastic few days at Excel London, chatting to lots of #eventprofs and making some great new connections. I’d also been a guest panellist on two of The Power of Events sessions, sharing my views on recruitment trends and career pathways with Rick Stainton and Simon Hughes. It was easily the best event I attended last year and I fully expected to return there in 2025, building on the strong business development foundations laid throughout 2024. But fast forward 12 months and I’m now back in the Education & Youth Work sector, working for Co-operation Ireland on their SEPI (Shared Education for Positive Innovation) Programme. I’m really excited about this new role as I’ve been passionate about cross-community projects since settling in a border county in Ireland over 10yrs ago. (More information about SEPI, as well as the challenges and opportunities presented by peacebuilding, will follow at a later date!) It's incredible how quickly things can change, in both your personal life and professional life. When I transitioned into the Events Industry in 2023, I genuinely thought that would be the career path I would follow for the rest of my career. It was a huge jump from Teacher & Youth Leader to Business Development Manager & Commercial Director, although a lot of the core skills (communication, relationship-building, transparency, organisation, resilience, strategic planning) remained the same. But unexpected incidents can have an immediate impact on your circumstances, forcing you to pivot in a new direction and make difficult decisions. Many businesses learnt hard lessons during the pandemic, one of which was the importance of staying agile. And I’ve realised over the last 12 months that this applies to us as individuals as well. Future-proofing your career options can be hugely beneficial and provide a degree of security should you be suddenly faced with redundancy or a drastic change in your personal life. Putting a small amount of money aside into savings can give you a financial buffer should you need to find a new job. Not having the pressure of finding employment immediately can give you the breathing space to find a role you actually want rather than taking any old job just to pay the bills. Also, constantly upskilling through CPD opportunities makes sure your CV stays relevant and continuously widening your network of contacts will provide greater outreach if you ever have to utilise LinkedIn’s ‘open to work’ banner. Although a cliché, the phrase ‘failing to plan is planning to fail’ is definitely worth noting. Never get complacent or too comfortable in your job, or in life in general, because you never know what’s waiting around the corner. In as little as 12 months, you could be on a completely new trajectory. Be proactive, plan ahead and stay agile.
