We’re taking on the role of Chair of CEOS (Committee on Earth Observation Satellites). 🛰️ CEOS coordinates global observations of the Earth from space, benefitting everything from climate monitoring to disaster management. 🌍 The UK Space Agency’s role as Chair will focus on 4 key areas: 1. Creating opportunities for knowledge sharing and exploring how CEOS can unlock Earth Observation data for public sector services. 2. Working with CEOS and JAXA: Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency to boost the implementation of Earth Observation data in the next global stocktake for climate action. 3. Using UK expertise to promote space-based methane measurement guidelines and support the UK’s commitment to reducing methane emissions – a crucial step towards addressing climate change. 4. Inspiring the next generation by teaching students around the world about the vital role satellite Earth Observation plays in tackling climate change, environmental protection, and disaster management. This morning, our Head of Policy, Stephanie Ayres, highlighted how "#space underpins all eight of the Government's target industry sectors and how working better across the space enterprise could deliver rapid and low cost benefits," during a panel about 'Next Steps for the UK Space Industry' at the Westminster Energy Environment and Transport Forum policy conference. Stephanie was joined on the panel by Nik Smith from Lockheed Martin, who highlighted the need for the UK Government not to spread the effort too thinly, but rather focus on the key things we will need to maintain global competitive advantage in uncertain geopolitical times. Debbie Strang placed SaxaVord Spaceport UK at the heart of our global place in space, while Emma Southwell-Sander from STFC complemented this vision with a talk about the UK’s national cluster of science and technology capabilities at Harwell. Rob Desborough from Seraphim Space helped clarify the investment dynamics and pointed to a need to focus on improving scalability for UK firms.
