Leeds’ only University Technical College, UTC Leeds, provides high-quality academic and vocational training focused specifically on the advanced engineering and high-tech manufacturing sector. Last week we had the pleasure of having a work experience student from UTC Leeds work with us for the full week at Asda House. Alexia was a student who connected with us after volunteering her time to help out at a Girls in Data session we were running at her college, where she was inspired by the program and the opportunities it highlighted for Women in Data®. It is nice to also see her passion about increasing female representation in computer science and how she is already thinking ahead. Even thinking about pursuing a career in teaching to help make that a reality for future generations. Throughout her week with us, Alexia joined our Business Intelligence team and got hands-on experience in various areas. We had some really insightful discussions about the role of women in data, the challenges around data literacy, and how we need to evolve as an industry to meet future demands. She didn’t just observe, she got involved, shadowing the Retail BI and Legal & Compliance BI teams, diving into customer insights, and even developing a Power BI dashboard analysing soft drink sales. She has been a shining star all week, and it’s clear she has a very bright future ahead. I’m genuinely excited to see where her journey takes her next... Whether it’s in data, education, or wherever her passions lead her. A huge thank you to Mark Stevens for your invaluable support and guidance throughout the week.
