A Fresh Perspective on Crown Melbourne’s Riverfront On Friday, 24 January 2025, Edward Daines and I had the opportunity to visit a project we were involved in for Crown Resorts - Melbourne throughout 2023/24—the recently opened Marmont Bar. As the first venue revealed in Crown Resorts - Melbourne’s latest transformation, it’s already proving to be a success, with strong patron appreciation. Crown Resorts engaged WilkinsonEyre to reimagine how their Melbourne resort could better connect with the Yarra River promenade—creating a more open, welcoming, and vibrant experience. The result? A venue that feels relaxed, familiar, inviting, and fun—a true shift in how Crown interacts with the riverfront. It was fantastic to catch up with the team from Crown and Grant Smillie to hear about the positive response so far and their aspirations for the space moving forward. A big thank you to our collaborators Mitchell & Eades for their outstanding interior and hospitality design and Kyriacou Architects as Architects of Record. Looking forward to seeing how this new chapter for Crown unfolds! #Architecture #HospitalityDesign #UrbanActivation #Placemaking #MelbourneDesign #crownresorts

Last week WilkinsonEyre had the privilege of taking part in Archi-UK, an exhibition organised by the British Embassy Paris to highlight the most innovative practices working in UK architecture and engineering. We were delighted to meet so many people who shared our desire to collaborate and were receptive to the ideas and thinking being showcased by the 18 British practices selected to exhibit at the event. The show was held over two days in the exquisite setting of The Hôtel de Charost, the Ambassador’s residence on Paris’s prestigious Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. This glamorous and richly decorative historic setting, replete with enormous chandeliers, ornate mirrors, fireplaces and paintings of the Ambassadors to France who have lived there since 1814, formed an unusual and quirky backdrop to this exhibition of technically advanced contemporary architecture. It was a juxtaposition, however, which worked and served to highlight and embody the spirit of British Design Excellence - one which happily marries old with new, celebrates the existing and gives it new life. WilkinsonEyre’s exhibition displayed a selection of projects which speak to our DNA and the threads of transformation, placemaking and sustainability found in our work, as well as the marriage between architecture and engineering that underpins and creates the beauty in so many of our projects. As well as delivering a presentation on our work transforming heritage buildings, WilkinsonEyre Director Sebastien Ricard took part in a panel discussion and met with Dame Menna Rawlings, Ambassador for the UK in France; Jo Hawley, the Deputy Trade Commissioner for Europe; and Gareth Thomas MP, Minister for Services and Exports to discuss how architects and engineers can grow their businesses in France and the rest of Europe. We are very much looking forward to presenting an extended edition of this exhibition at Hong Kong Arts Centre in February.

A very pleasant return to Melbourne to welcome in 2025 with a visit to one of our recently completed projects there. A small project, but one that signals big intentions. The newly opened Marmont Bar is the first visible result of Crown Resorts approach to WilkinsonEyre asking us to reimagine how their Melbourne resort on the banks of the Yarra could engage with the riverside promenade in a more open and welcoming manner. Keen to understand the initial results, as dedicated professionals, Stuart Dow and myself took one for the team last week and spent some time sipping cold drinks under the new pergola and slow turning ceiling fans in the name of research. Very much enjoyed talking to the team from Crown and Grant Smillie too about how the first weeks have been and his aspirations for the place going forwards. Certainly our initial findings were that the open, breezy view of the water and city skyline that has been opened up is going to be a great success. With the large sliding glass panes at the entrance lifted up out of the way they were scarcely noticeable - which is of course entirely the point. Loved the murals too! Certainly the place was nicely filled with a good range of people on the sunny mid-afternoon we visited. All extremely pleasant, and I suspect further first-hand research on site may be needed. Full credit of course to Mitchell & Eades and Kyriacou Architects for their interiors and expert execution respectively. #wilkinsoneyre #melbourne #marmontbar

🏗️ Rethinking Brisbane 2032: A Bigger, Bolder Vision 🏟️ It started with a view from a plane window—an overlooked opportunity hiding in plain sight. WilkinsonEyre’s Stuart Dow and Edward Daines spotted the Mayne Rail Yards and asked: What if Brisbane’s Olympics legacy could be more than just scattered venues? What if it could reshape the city itself? Their proposal? A holistic, city-making approach—not just an Olympic site, but a lasting transformation. A new 60,000-seat stadium, a major transport hub, and a redefined urban precinct that could connect communities long after the Games. This isn’t just about hosting an event—it’s about winning the future for Brisbane. London 2012 did it. Melbourne still feels its Olympic legacy. Now, Brisbane has the chance to do the same. The question is: Will we seize the opportunity? #Brisbane2032 #UrbanDesign #OlympicLegacy #WilkinsonEyre #Architecture

From Toronto to Copenhagen via Gateshead, WilkinsonEyre has designed dozens of bridges. Working alongside Cundall, we recently submitted a proposal for a 136m long bridge linking Central Park in Dongguan to an adjacent urban regeneration development. The bridge was required to span an eight-lane highway with no intermediate support. With extensive tree planting on either side of the highway, we proposed an inverted Fink truss to minimise the extent of disruptive foundations and, with its relatively low profile, to avoid visually dominating the trees. The tension cable arrangement appears to span between the trees, maximising the views and appreciation of the natural forest. A stretched fabric canopy in the form of a series of sails offer shade as well as a canvas for projections. Planters with integrated seating and a water feature extend landscaping and biodiversity onto the bridge deck. Integrating a café into the supporting pillars give the bridge life and a purpose of its own while lighting ensures the bridge is activated both by day and night.

Included in the RIBA JOURNALS LIMITED hand sketch exhibition in Hong Kong is the Sky Bridge, Hong Kong International Airport. “With its clean unambiguous lines, WilkinsonEyre’s Sky Bridge study unites infrastructure and architecture to describe the building’s long-span structural geometry, aesthetics and functionality. An aeroplane created from a simple combination of line and shape deftly communicates the sheer scale and landscape quality of this hybrid form.” Matthew Potter, Director, will be attending the ceremony Thursday evening. https://lnkd.in/gFa7ndrs #RIBAJournal #HongKong #Handsketch #exhibition #architecture #skybridge #hongkonginternationalairport

Today, I will be heading off to Paris for the UK Architecture Showcase organised by the British Embassy Paris. Not only is this an occasion to showcase British architecture and engineering practices in Paris, but it is also an opportunity to strengthen the business relationship between the UK and France. It highlights our deep interest in developing projects in France, drawing upon the current experience we already have on site in the capital, such as the David Bowie Bridge. Whilst we are neighbours, we have different ways of thinking when designing and commissioning projects in France and the UK. These differences in approach are fantastic, and we still have much to learn from both sides in order to work even more closely together. This week, we will be exhibiting some of WilkinsonEyre’s work, but I will also be participating in roundtable discussions about the different approaches to commissioning major masterplans in both countries (a subject very close to my heart). I will also participate in a short talk on the importance of integrating our industrial heritage into future developments. Please feel free to come and see our stand, where I will be joined by my colleagues Stafford Critchlow RIBA FRSA, Frédéric ANDRE, Emilie Lemons Golding, and Joshua Labarraque.
