Circular Buildings Coalition (CBC)
Building Construction
CBC convenes industry and thought leaders who are committed to creating a circular built environment.
About us
Given its immense material footprint, contribution to greenhouse gas emissions, and impact on human wellbeing, the built environment is a key leverage point in achieving the goals put forward in the Paris Agreement as well as many other sustainability objectives. Together we are leading the way to a circular built environment. CBC is a collaboration that convenes industry and thought leaders who aim to accelerate the implementation of circular economy solutions as a way of creating a global built environment that operates within planetary boundaries while ensuring a just transition. Join us in accelerating the transition towards a circular built environment in Europe. At CBC, we bring together built environment stakeholders to overcome barriers and embrace circular economy practices. Why does the CBC exist? The challenges of transitioning to a circular economy in the built environment are vast, with roots at local, national, and European levels. However, many impact-driven organizations worldwide are already addressing these challenges. As a coalition, we aim to amplify their efforts and lead the way forward. To move forward, CBC has a clear roadmap with the following missions: • Creating a common language, skills, and knowledge base around how a circular economy in the built environment can help achieve our climate goals while delivering value to businesses. • Increasing demand for circular economy solutions with the key stakeholders in the built environment. • Realising increased collaboration across the value chain between established high-impact actors, and front-runner organisations, that might not otherwise occur. • Promoting the development and uptake of scalable solutions and best practices that address systemic challenges in a transition to a circular built environment. CBC is a partnership between Arup, Circle Economy Foundation, Ellen MacArthur Foundation, Metabolic, WBCSD and WorldGBC, powered by Smith Innovation and funded by Laudes Foundation.

𝗔 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 The Building Passport Alignment Project rolled into Brussels last week to lead a workshop looking to define a Vision for Data in the Built Environment, the latest stage on our work on our Circular Buildings Coalition (CBC) Blueprint Project. With our friends at BPIE - Buildings Performance Institute Europe , Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC) and DemoBLog , we brought together representatives from across the value chain from product suppliers, through to policy makers and standard setters. We were excited to be joined by DG GROW, DG ENER, DG ENV and HaDEA and representatives from INREV and EPRA (European Public Real Estate Association) and a host of other organisations, tagged below. After a welcome statement from Oliver Rapf, and presentations from Zsolt Toth and Philippe Moseley on the current context, the hard work of the day began by exploring some of the data challenges that exist today in the built environment, and what the world would look like if all the challenges were solved. Karim Farghaly did a great job of summarising the reports back into 5 key themes. We heard that in a utopian vision, information should be TACIT: · Transparent · Aligned · Clear · Interoperable · Trustworthy After lunch we heard about the current state of the art in Digital Building Logbooks (in their various forms) from ChillServices (CAPSA) , VITO (Woningpas) and Madaster. The afternoon was then spent exploring what needs to be done - and how urgently - to deliver this co-created Vision for Data in the Built Environment. Now I may be biased, but as we made the TACIT explicit, the role and importance of our work at the Building Passport Alignment Project became clearer. Addressing each of the themes supporting the vision begins with a common language, or as the Construction Product Regulations calls it, a common data dictionary. We’re making the first steps on the road to this data dictionary at the building level and are linking up with organisations across the world to make this a reality – a shout goes out here to mindful MATERIALS for their work at the product level. We’ll be sharing an update on the event in the new year, but for now, we would like to thank all of our participants for their time and energy that they contributed to making the day such a success.
