The built environment is not on track to reach #netzero by 2050. The sector holds immense potential for climate action, but we do not yet have enough policy ambition to address the urgency of #climatechange. As leaders come together for the UN Climate Conference #COP29 in just a few weeks, it’s vital that the #builtenvironment is a cornerstone of the conversations. Therefore, the World Green Building Council and the global network of Green Building Councils are calling on Parties to #BeBoldOnBuildings and commit to: 🟢 Enhance ambition with #NDCs 🟢 Enable action through climate finance 🟢 Strengthen resilience with adaptation planning 🟢 Increase commitment to the #BuildingsBreakthrough See our latest briefing paper for full details of successful outcomes for COP29 Azerbaijan negotiations from a building sector perspective: https://bit.ly/4e4uJ8a Each year of delays allows buildings that are not aligned with the #ParisAgreement to be constructed. Now is the time to act, and ensure that COP29 outcomes are enabling us to transition the built environment onto a 1.5°C aligned decarbonisation trajectory. #BuildingTheTransition #BuildingToCOP #BuildingToCOP29

Buildings have a significant role to play in the protection and restoration of #biodiversity and ecosystems. But what role can sustainable finance play? With the Convention on Biological Diversity #COP16Colombia currently underway, it’s time to recognise the current unequal relationship between humans and ecosystems, and plan how we can make #PeaceWithNature. The #EUTaxonomy provides criteria for economic activities to identify if they are aligned with climate and environmental goals. This includes doing no significant harm to biodiversity and ecosystems. But there are some challenges with the interpretation and implementation of the criteria. The latest factsheet in our #sustainablefinance series explores these challenges and offers recommendations for how the EU Taxonomy criteria can align with other EU policies for more joined up action and reporting. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/exQPmykV While you’re there, see the other factsheets on navigating ESG schemes, Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB), major renovations and Energy Performance Certificates (EPC). #BuildingTheTransition #BuildingToCOP #BuildingToCOP29

We're getting ready for the World Urban Forum (#WUF12) and you’re invited to join us. On 7 November 2024, 13:00 EET, WorldGBC and OECD Development Centre will co-host an event at this annual global conference, dedicated to sustainable urbanisation, held in Cairo, Egypt. The in person event ‘Pathways to Net Zero: System innovations for emerging urban centres and zero carbon readiness in Middle East and Africa’ will take a tour through the systemic challenges we face in urban planning across the region when it comes to achieving sustainable and resilient built environments in developing countries. Our panel of speakers exploring this challenge includes: - Aimée Aguilar Jaber, Programme Director, Hot or Cool Institute - Vicente Ruiz, Economist, OECD - OCDE - Amira Ayoub, Middle East & North Africa Regional Head, World Green Building Council - Hala Omar, Sustainability Manager, Dar (member of Sidara Collaborative) & Vice-President of Egypt Green Building Council (Egypt GBC) - Habiba Al Mar’ashi, Co-founder and Chairperson of Emirates Environmental Group (EEG), Board Member of Emirates Green Building Council and Vice-Chair of the WorldGBC Board. We will be joined by Green Building Councils (GBCs) and partners from across the WorldGBC #MENA and Africa networks at this event.
