[Y/N] Studio is an architecture practice. We find for simple answers to complex problems to maximise quality and value.
About us
[Y/N] Studio is a creative platform established by architect Alex Smith to ask questions of the built environment. The complexity associated with designing and constructing our cities is astounding and a great deal of architecture serves only to ADD complexity. We think the role of the designer is to question these established but convoluted processes and to REDUCE complexity. We work with the various inputs, histories, technologies and constraints with which we are presented to formulate a response rather than imposing an abstract theology, manifesto or style. We, as architects, are editors of the process. The questions, and the problems, can be incredibly complex, but a successful answer should be as simple as YES or NO. Since forming as a company in January 2017, we have been working on a diverse range of commissions, from carefully detailed small-scale extensions to 100+ multi-unit housing schemes, a large workspace in Dalston, and a mixed-use tower in South London. Recently we won a competition for 4 holiday homes in Greatsone-on-Sea, which are designed as a continuous spiral of floorplates to maximise sea views and reduce circulation space. In 2018 we will start on-site with at least 4 projects most notably the extension and refurbishment of the Bradbury Street workspaces which face onto Gillett Square in Hackney. This will include around 1500m2 of work space, a temporary deck for the duration of construction which can be used by local communities providing active frontage on all sides of the square for the first time in it’s history. The people who work with us are talented and ambitious with backgrounds working in London, Switzerland and Copenhagen for Internationally recognised practices.

Can a playframe for children also function as a site specific art installation? Dulwich Picture Gallery, the world’s oldest purpose-built art gallery, houses an impressive collection of Old Master paintings. Our approach to “reimaging play” involves creating engaging and interactive art that positively impacts the community and enhances the gallery experience. Designed by Sir John Soane, the gallery features neoclassical arches which are playfully referenced in the proposal. Artists use perspective techniques to create depth and manipulate perspective for dramatic or disorienting effect while Play, an enjoyable activity, varies based on individual perspectives. Our installation, “playspective,” merges a 21st-century three-dimensional interpretation of perspective tricks with a co-designed play frame for younger visitors. _______________________________________ Reimagining Play at Dulwich Picture Gallery Location: Dulwich Picture Gallery, London, UK Type: Culture, learn, Size: 40m2 Client: London Festival of Architecture Status: Competition Date: 2024 Collaborators: Architects: [Y/N] Studio Structural Engineer: Format Engineers

Can a pragmatic response to flood risk create a unique riverside home? [Y/N] Studio were asked to replace a dilapidated single storey bungalow to allow for the construction of a new holiday home on the banks of the river in Sunbury on Thames. Given its location flood risk prevented ground floor accommodation at the typical water level and the building was required to be considerate to the immediate context of small single storey homes. Our response is a single storey house positioned on stilts to provide beautiful views of the scenery while responding to unpredictable climactic conditions. The elevated ground floor level is set in line with the pavement at +10.0 meters to suit the flood risk requirements of the context while creating a riverside garden which is sunken below at +7.0m Internally, an open plan living space maximises the opportunity of the limited space available. Glazed partitions allow for a generous bedroom to be separated from the living space but ensure the desired riverside view. A glazed triple sliding door in the living space allows for 2/3 of the facade to open up towards the river increasing the connection from inside to out. _______________________________________ Riverside Home Location: Sunbury-on-Thames, UK Type: Residential Size: 51m2 Client: Confidential Status: Planning Date: 2022- Collaborators: Architect: [Y/N] Studio

Can a former department store be reimagined as a mixed-use framework and create new opportunities for the high street? A department store is a framework for retail. With large, flexible areas, it is designed to accommodate changing demands, supporting and enabling businesses and shoppers, working as both infrastructure and showcase. Our proposal develops this framework, to create the supporting infrastructure for Folkestone’s social, creative, and business communities. In a literal sense, we would retain the building’s structure and key elements (facade, staircase), creating flexible floor plates which can be divided and re-arranged to meet the requirements of changing occupiers. We would extend the framework upwards and outwards, continuing the grand staircase up to a new roof terrace, and creating a sheltered transition area between high street and facade. By removing some sections of floor plate internally, we can create voids and light wells, allowing light into the building, creating a hierarchy to support public and more private uses, and generating views through to different levels, encouraging people to explore. This approach aims to provide a structure that will support changing uses, on an annual, seasonal, weekly, or even daily basis. It retains the character of the building, with minimal, considered, efficient and elegant interventions that create an overarching structure and identity within which Folkstone’s creativity can thrive. _______________________________________ Folca Location: Folkestone, Kent Type: Public, Leisure, Cultural, Exhibition Size: 4740m2 Client: Folkestone & Hythe District Council Status: Competition Date: 2023 Collaborators Architects: [Y/N] Studio Alex Smith Elena Gruber Consultation lead / Interiors: Projects Office Ltd Structural Engineer: @bailissandco Services Engineer: MWL Financial Group Quantity Surveyor: @wearebandm_ b&m | Certified B Corp #ynstudioarchitects
