Understanding the Transition from EUTR to EUDR 🧠 The European Union has recently updated its regulatory framework concerning deforestation and forest degradation, replacing the European Union Timber Regulation (EUTR) with the new EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). Here's a breakdown of what this transition means and the key differences between the two regulations: 📅 Implementation Timeline: The EUDR is set to take effect on December 30, 2024. Small businesses will have an extended deadline until June 30, 2025, to comply. 📈 What This Means for Businesses: The transition represents a significant shift towards more strict regulation of commodities linked to deforestation. The EUDR reflects the EU's commitment to sustainable trade and environmental protection. #EU-Parliament briefing on the #Green Claim Directive: Many labels claim products are 'greener' 'more sustainable' or 'eco-friendlier' than others. In 2020, there were around 230 active ecolabels in Europe, and 100 private green energy labels have been mapped in the EU. Can consumers or companies be sure that these claims are based on solid grounds? In 2020, the European Commission found that 53 % of examined environmental claims in the EU were vague, misleading or unfounded, and 40 % were unsubstantiated. The absence of specific EU rules contributes to this situation. The 2019 communication on the European Green Deal stressed the need to rethink a broad range of EU policies to transform the EU economy for a more sustainable future – including those policies affecting production and consumption.

EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation Advances 👏 The European Parliament has recently given tacit approval to the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), a pivotal step forward in the legislative journey. This regulation was adopted on 27 November without a vote, following the absence of objections from MEPs. 💡 Key Milestones: - Publication: Set for the Official Journal of the EU. - Implementation: Expected to enter into force at the beginning of 2025, with an 18-month transition period. - Differing Provisions: Includes various provisions with differing transition periods. Next Steps: The final legislative hurdle involves approval by the Council of the EU, scheduled for either 16 December at the Transport, Communication and Energy Council or on 17 December at the Environment Council.
