Strategic Advisor to WSP ICE Gold Medal Winner, 2024 and Past Chair at South West Infrastructure Partnership (SWIP)
Well - it was quite a surprise to receive a letter from Mark Hansford to say that I had been awarded the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Gold Medal this year! Didn't even know I'd been nominated! Up to One Great George Street last Friday to receive the award. It was almost 50 years to the day that I'd walked into The University of Edinburgh to start learning about civil engineering. And I'm still learning! Thanks to everyone who I've worked with over the years - many famous and not so famous names no longer with us - people and companies. I'm still actively involved with WSP in the UK, South West Infrastructure Partnership (SWIP) and Great South West and working with great clients including The Crown Estate and Western Gateway on topics including tidal power, FLOW, carbon assessment, net zero and climate adaptation. It was inspiring to be able to talk to Prof. (Dr) Anusha Shah over lunch about our common interest in infrastructure development that is focused on benefitting society and the planet. Alice Bhandhukravi did a great job as compere getting around some wonderful tongue twisters when the awards for written papers were presented. It was also fascinating to talk to the other award winners on our table - martha mcgowan I hope you got back to Coldingham before midnight! Finally, I couldn't help but take a photo of that wonderful ceiling!
