In the latest episode of Mind the Gap, Mariella Frostrup talks to Greg Jackson, CEO and Founder of Octopus Energy, a pioneering power company focused on delivering green energy to more than 7 million homes across 18 countries. Greg has transformed the energy sector with a model of sustainability and innovation. Raised by a single mother in Middlesbrough, his early experiences shaped his relentless drive and commitment to social causes, including female inclusion. Octopus Energy boasts 50% female representation on its board and a minimal pay gap - significantly lower than the national average. Greg’s commitment to female inclusion is evident in Octopus Energy's policies and practices. The company supports flexible working arrangements and has initiatives to encourage women in technology. He believes in the importance of role models and diverse voices in decision-making, which strengthens the company. Despite the challenges women face in the workplace, Greg's approach demonstrates that creating an inclusive and supportive environment is achievable. His leadership at Octopus Energy serves as a powerful example of how companies can thrive by valuing and empowering their employees. Hear how Greg’s upbringing, marked by financial struggles and a strong work ethic instilled by his mother, taught him the importance of self-resilience and responsibility, and how his personal experiences have set the foundations for company culture at Octopus, where ‘freedom and responsibility’ allows for greater employee autonomy and faster growth. This week, we’re celebrating Natasha Baker, six-time Paralympic champion, as our Woman of the Week 🌟 Natasha’s dedication to equestrian sport has always been unwavering, but the arrival of her son, Joshua, has profoundly reshaped her priorities. As Natasha put it, “Riding was my entire life since I was 10, but Joshua coming along has completely turned my life upside down. He is the most important thing in my world now.” She describes motherhood as a “superpower,” fueling her drive and passion. Thank you to Natasha, and all of the incredible mothers in this year's games, for showing how motherhood can enhance our strength and resilience, even in the most demanding of fields. With many children starting new school years, this transition can be a challenging period for families. It’s an opportunity for companies to demonstrate their commitment to parents by providing the support needed to navigate these changes smoothly. Read our latest newsletter with Louise Webster, Founder of Beyondtheschoolrun who shared some key considerations for organisations during this pivotal time. We are once again proud to support @smartworkscharity- a UK charity that exists to empower all women who need help getting into work. Smart Works is a dynamic, high profile and fast-growing UK charity that exists to empower all women who need help getting into work. The charity’s service uses the power of high quality clothing and one-to-one coaching to help unemployed women fulfil their potential, get the job and transform their lives.   Last year, Smart Works Charity supported over 8,000 women through their service. 63% of these clients secured a job within one month of their appointment, gaining financial independence and transforming their lives.   Since its founding in 2013, Smart Works has helped over 35,000 women across the UK. The charity’s mission is that any woman who needs to use the service should be able to find her way to a Smart Works centre.    We love their initiative and were blown away by the amount of clothes that were donated last year so we will be doing the same again this year. Menopause in the workplace isn't just a women's issue—it's a business imperative. Women over 50 are the fastest-growing demographic in the workforce and retaining this talent is crucial for organisations to thrive. According to a UK Parliamentary survey carried out in 2022, 92% of respondents reported that menopause symptoms affected them at work. As well as difficulties caused by menopause symptoms themselves, the survey highlighted that the attitude of other colleagues and line managers can have a significant impact on people experiencing the menopause or menstruation, in terms of feeling able to seek support and even stay in their job. In our latest online session, we were joined by Helen Tomlinson, Head of Talent and Inclusion UK and Ireland at the Adecco Group and the government's first Menopause Employment Champion; Anne Hayes, Director of Sectors and Standards Development at BSI; and Levina Fowler, Head of Engagement and Well-being at Marks and Spencer, to talk about the importance of addressing menopause in the workplace and the steps organisations can take to support their female employees.
