Enhancing Skills of Medical Professionals in Maternal and Child Health   From September 4 to 24, training sessions and master classes for neonatologists and pediatric surgeons took place at the Republican Perinatal Center and the Republican Specialized Scientific-Practical Medical Center for Maternal and Child Health in the Khorezm region, featuring German experts from the Carl Gustav Carus University Hospital in Dresden.   🎯 The main objective of these workshops was to improve the quality and qualifications of medical specialists in the field of maternal and child health.   🧰 Portable ultrasound machines were provided to several regional facilities, along with training seminars on their use. This will significantly enhance the level of diagnosis and treatment for newborns.   🛠️ Complex surgical operations were conducted during the training, allowing neonatal surgeons from pilot regions to refine their skills and learn new techniques.   A big “Thank you” to all participants and supporters for their contributions and their commitment to enhancing professional standards for mothers and newborns in Uzbekistan!

🌍 Uzbekistan’s Progress Highlighted at 2024 ACN Plenary Meeting at OECD Headquarters in Paris, supported by GIZ In September 2024, the OECD - OCDE headquarters in Paris hosted a significant plenary meeting of the Anti-Corruption Network for Eastern Europe and Central Asia (ACN). Senior officials and leaders from Uzbekistan’s law enforcement agencies, anti-corruption bodies, internal security services, judiciary, and public financial institutions participated in the event, supported by the project “Improving Governance in Uzbekistan - Inclusive Corruption Prevention” as part of the Good Governance Program, implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. The project is co-funded by the European Union  and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).  This gathering aimed to drive anti-corruption reforms across the region and featured two key events: the 23rd Istanbul Anti-Corruption Action Plan (IAP) monitoring meeting and the 29th ACN Steering Group meeting. During the 23rd monitoring session, held on 17 and 18 September, draft reports for Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan were discussed. In particular, the report on Uzbekistan, prepared following bilateral consultations, was reviewed and approved at the ACN meeting on 18 September. The report assessed Uzbekistan’s anti-corruption policy across nine key areas, including the prevention of conflicts of interest, transparency in public procurement, and business practices.  Uzbekistan’s overall anti-corruption efforts accumulated an impressive score of over 70 out of 100, reflecting significant progress. The country has achieved notable milestones, including the State Anti-Corruption Programme for 2023-2024, the elaboration of a comprehensive Anti-Corruption Strategy until 2030, and increased engagement from civil society in anti-corruption initiatives. While areas such as accountability for corruption offences, conflict of interest management, and whistleblower protection present opportunities for further enhancement, these achievements lay a strong foundation for ongoing improvements in the fight against corruption. On 19 September, the 29th ACN Steering Group convened to review the accomplishments of 2024 and plan for 2025. One of the highlights was the introduction of the pilot Regional Anti-Corruption Outlook Report, which showcased regional trends, success stories, and ongoing challenges in anti-corruption policies and business integrity.  Information on ACN: https://bit.ly/4elrdXX Akmal Burkhanov | Umida Tuhtasheva | Jana Kurpiša | Regional Dialogue Viktor Kessler | Jakhongir Berdiev | Arifa Fatykhova

💻 GIZ and ARGOS seminar on Human Resource Development at the the Ministry of Digital Technologies. On 24 September 2024, the Good Governance Program, implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), in partnership with the Civil Service Development Agency of the Republic of Uzbekistan (ARGOS), hosted a seminar on Human Resource Development for Digital Transformation at the The Ministry of Digital Technologies of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The seminar was aimed to enhance human resource capabilities to support technology-driven governance.  GIZ expert Damir Ahmetovic highlighted the seminar's goals, focusing on practical activities and group work. The event aimed to create strategies to improve human resource development in both the digital and public sectors, particularly within the Ministry of Digital Technologies. Participants discussed the current state of digital skills among civil servants and identified the gap between the demand for skilled professionals and the available workforce. The discussions revealed a shortage of qualified experts in IT, digital services, and digital governance within the public sector. To bridge this gap, the seminar explored potential partnerships, training programmes, and other solutions.  A draft ‘Human Resource Planning’ programme was introduced to align workforce skills with the ministry's needs. The plan aims to develop a strong pipeline of digital professionals through targeted recruitment, training, and capacity-building initiatives. The importance of preparing the workforce for future digital challenges was emphasised.  The seminar also addressed potential challenges in implementing the strategy, proposing phased approaches and international support to overcome them. A monitoring plan was created to track the progress of the new initiatives, with ongoing collaboration between the Ministry, ARGOS, and GIZ to refine the programme and strengthen partnerships.  Viktor Kessler| Jasmina Popin| Arifa Fatykhova
