Today in Transportation History: 1992: The Formal Unveiling of a Freeway in Australia’s Most Populous City. Gore Hill Freeway in Sydney, Australia’s most populous city and the capital of the state of New South Wales (NSW), was formally introduced to the public in a Sunday morning ceremony. That day’s edition of the Sydney Morning Herald reported, “The $27 million Gore Hill Freeway officially opens today, improving access to and from Sydney’s oldest and newest traffic links — the Harbour Bridge and the Harbour Tunnel, which opens next Sunday.” Read more: https://bit.ly/4g86ng6 #Transportation #History

Today in Transportation History: 1978: The Launch of a Wooden Schooner off the Coast of New Hampshire. Appledore II, a privately owned two-masted wooden schooner, was launched from the coast of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. This vessel — with an overall length of 86 feet (26 meters) — is larger than her sister ships Appledore I, III, IV, and V. All of these ships were constructed for Herbert and Doris Smith. The source of the shared name of the vessels is Appledore Island, which is part of the Isles of Shoals and located about seven miles (11.3 kilometers) off the coast of Maine. Today in Transportation History: 2021: The Extension of a Rapid Transit System in the Geographical Heart of India. Regular operations began for a one-mile (1.6-kilometer) extension of the rapid transit system serving the city of Nagpur in India’s state of Maharashtra.
