Thank you for the acknowledgement, ZEEDS initiative! 🤗 We'll keep you updated on the exciting Apollo milestones ahead!
Pioneering Sustainable Shipping with Ammonia Combustion Engine! The ZEEDS initiative is applauding our key partners Equinor and Wärtsilä, who are participating in converting the supply vessel Viking Energy to operate with an ammonia driven combustion engine, making it the first in the world! By 2026, Viking Energy will operate on ammonia for Equinor, reducing GHG emissions at least 70%. This summer, they reached a significant milestone by placing an order for a Wärtsilä W25 ammonia engine with associated tank and fuel gas supply system. "This conversion is made possible by the support and investment from Equinor. We are very pleased to partner with a client that shares our ambitious climate targets, on a project that can help kick-start a wider adoption of ammonia across the shipping industry,” says Gitte Gard Talmo, former CEO and President of Eidesvik Offshore ASA. The Apollo Ammonia Project will be a pioneer in demonstrating new technologies that significantly reduce emissions from shipping! In addition to the ammonia dual fuel engine, Viking Energy is also a demonstrator vessel in the EU-funded #ShipFC-project, where the aim is to pilot ammonia-powered fuel cells. This aligns perfectly with the ZEEDS initiative, and we are proud that our work has been vital to the becoming of this important demonstration project. What about the use of ammonia in the waterborne transport sector? Today, the Apollo project is in the spotlight as part of our social media campaign "Meet the Projects". Horizon Europe, including the Partnership on Zero-Emission Waterborne Transport, is a key funding tool to enhance Technology Leadership in the WaterborneTP sector. Through Apollo Ammonia Project, eight European partners will make “Viking Energy” the world’s first ammonia-powered platform supply vessel. In 2026, the vessel will operate on ammonia, reducing GHG emissions by 70 percent or more. The forecasted results of the project are: ▶️ Demonstrate in a real environment the use of an ammonia fuelled power generation system ▶️ Demonstrate that it is possible to achieve 70% or more GHG reduction using ammonia as a fuel ▶️ Provide up-to-date catalogue of suitable solutions for a wide variety of ship types and operation scenarios. ▶️ Increased competitiveness of European shipyards, repair yards, and European marine equipment providers within the domain of green shipping technology. 📢 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗔𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘁! 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗖𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗮 𝗙𝘂𝗲𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗧𝗮𝗻𝗸 🎉🚢⚙️ We’re thrilled to share that the steel cutting for the ammonia fuel storage tank, destined for installation onboard Viking Energy, has officially begun! This single-shelled tank is designed with cutting-edge safety and efficiency features: 🔹Pressurized Storage: Ensures safe containment of ammonia. 🔹Innovative Insulation: A thin layer prevents condensation on the outer surface. 🔹Enhanced Safety: Penetrations are positioned at one dished end, enclosed by a patented Tank Connection Space. Penetrations below the liquid level are safeguarded with nitrogen-pressurized pipes for added leakage protection. The first step in the tank manufacturing process is now in motion. Plates are meticulously cut according to a nesting plan, following thorough verification of their certifications and specifications. ❗ This precision work sets the foundation for subsequent phases, including plastic forming, nozzle preparation, and welding edge preparation—all tailored to meet the tank's rigorous requirements. This milestone reflects the commitment and expertise of our team as we pave the way for innovative and sustainable energy solutions 👊 ▶️ Stay tuned for more updates as we bring this vision to life! 🌍⚡ #Milestone #SustainableShipping #AmmoniaFuel #Innovation | Wärtsilä | Eidesvik Offshore ASA | Equinor | Maritime CleanTech | VTT | DEME Group | National Center for Scientific Research "Demokritos" | Breeze Ship Design | European Commission | CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency | Anna Karamigkou PhD |

Apollo Ammonia Project reposted this
🚢 The Norwegian government has announced #zeroemission requirements for the #offshore fleet starting from 2029. However, how these requirements will be implemented remains an open question ... Today, I had the pleasure of discussing this at a Maritime CleanTech event alongside State Secretary Sigrun Aasland, Equinor and other key players in the industry. To sum up my key points: 🌱 Zero-emission requirements should be targeted at new supply vessels, where predictable operational patterns make compliance more feasible 🌱 Meeting these goals relies on the availability of technology and the safe demonstration of new fuels, and at Eidesvik Offshore ASA, we’re committed to supporting this journey through initiatives like the Apollo Ammonia Project 🌱 We need a strong public funding framework with targeted programs that also meets the needs of the offshore sector. Zero-emission is an ambitious goal, but with collaboration across technology, policy, and industry, we can drive meaningful progress.
