Read on for a sneak peek of this week's 'China 5' newsletter, bringing you the 5 big things you need to know about #China each Friday from our experts at the Center for China Analysis ⬇ 1️⃣ Laden with mountains of nonperforming loans and bad assets, more than 60 regional and rural banks in China have been dissolved or merged in 2024 — Lynette H Ong 2️⃣ Premier Li Qiang chaired a full State Council meeting to study the guiding principles of the recent Third Plenum. Li emphasized the importance of unity in implementing the ongoing reform plans and completing the annual economic and social development goals — Lobsang Tsering, Senior Research Associate 3️⃣ Over the weekend, China and the Philippines were again embroiled in an incident near two disputed shoals in the South China Sea. Having recently agreed to de-escalation mechanisms in the SCS, this incident represents a setback for diffusing tensions between the two claimants — Lyle Morris 4️⃣ At a press conference, the Supreme People’s Procuratorate “attributed the improved protection of public water resources to enhanced cooperation between administrative and procuratorial authorities.” Collaboration between the SPP and the Ministry of Water reinforces that legislative and judicial mechanisms play an integral role in setting the tone for how environmental issues are prioritized and responded to in society — Taylah Bland 5️⃣ State media and official directives outlined key elements of the tech-driven modernization strategy central to the Third Plenum. Since the start of 2024, over 60 rural banks in #China have been dissolved or merged, highlighting the vulnerabilities of smaller financial institutions. Despite the country’s massive property sector crisis, China’s overall banking institutions appear robust to date. Smaller regional banks, however, are proving to be outliers. In the latest article from the Center for China Analysis, “The Weakest Link in China’s Debt-Fueled Growth Model: Chinese Indebted Rural Banks Carry Social Consequences beyond Their Size,” Senior Fellow Lynette H Ong argues that even though small lenders constitute only 13% of total banking assets in China, bank runs at even small rural banks can erode people’s faith in the banking system, with potential effects on social stability. Chief Executive Officer at Asia Society India Centre

Wonderful to meet Asia Society CEO Dr. Kyung-wha Kang. Talking to her really brought out the larger vision of Asia Society, which occupies such a rare and curious place — an amalgamation of all the best things about Asia, brought to the world, yet also an organisation with a clear mandate to facilitate peace and global understanding through dialogue. Every leader brings their own insights, experience and personality to the job, and it’s exciting to see Dr. Kang’s passionate interest in deepening Asia Society’s engagement with the incredible diversity of Asia. Looking forward to deepening Asia Society’s engagement with South Asia and to building our institution further.

Thank you Asia Society / Asia Society India Centre for the spotlight and your long standing support of IIX’s work. It was a treat to discuss my leadership style in this feature, especially in the midst of Bangladesh’s revolution. Defiant Optimism - the stubborn belief that systems that enrich the few can be transformed for the good of the many - is needed now more than ever. The student protests showed us exactly what Defiant Optimism can achieve. I’m sure this is not a surprise to you, but I get a lot of “questions” on my leadership style: Why do I choose to be defiant? Why does it seem as if I just like to rebel? What drives me to keep fighting even when I hear so many “nos” and “don’ts”? Here is my response: when we live in a system that is built on oppression and designed to maintain inequality, why wouldn’t you rebel against that? Why would you respond to that system with compliance? Or only silently disagree? Just food for thought… #DefiantOptimist #leadership #rebelforgood #inspiration #innovation #inclusivedevelopment #equality https://lnkd.in/eHUbjygE
