Autoship H2020

The Inland Waterway Transport (IWT) Projects Cooperation Platform was officially launched to support the Waterborne Days in Brussels, set to take place on February 4 and 5. The Platform provides a unique overview of a collaborative ecosystem of EU funded projects in the field of research, innovation and demonstration in #IWT. It brings together 37 different complementary projects. Our project Autoship H2020 is part of the platform. As a hub for European research, development and innovation projects, the Platform provides information on the ongoing projects. It also creates an environment where project coordinators and consortia connect, share insights and best practices, and strategically align their objectives. It addresses critical industry needs, such as deployment of zero-emission technologies, improving digitalisation, ensuring climate resilient infrastructure, enhancing logistics and a quality workforce. By providing a common space, the platform empowers stakeholders to overcome market barriers, support research work and to jointly make recommendations for policy measures. This Platform increases visibility of innovative projects to a broad range of stakeholders. It is also foreseen to jointly organise dissemination and stakeholder events. By driving collaboration, raising synergies and making joint recommendations, the IWT Projects Cooperation Platform contributes to shaping the future of inland waterway transport. Proud to share that yesterday we brought together some of the brightest minds in autonomous inland and short-sea shipping for a panel at #ICMASS! Taking the stage to represent the AUTOFLEX HEU Project were Kristoffer Kloch from DFDS and Øyvind Pedersen from Maritime Robotics AS. For FOREMAST, Tomas Ambra from INLECOM and Matko Barisic from ABB participated, while Ann-Sofie Pauwelyn from ZULU Associates represented ReNEW, and Morten Ingebretsen from Kongsberg Maritime spoke on behalf of SEAMLESS Project. The discussion was expertly moderated by Odd Erik Mørkrid from SINTEF Ocean. The panel delved into recent advancements in autonomous shipping technology and the work still needed to advance logistics automation. Industry partners emphasized the lasting value of commitment in research projects, noting that early-stage product development, strategic networking, increased visibility, and financial backing are essential for sustainable growth and innovation in this sector. The main takeaway? Panelists agreed that autonomous vessel development must be purposeful, driving practical, business-aligned solutions in maritime logistics. Autonomous ships, equipped with cutting-edge systems capable of making decisions independently, promise remarkable fuel and crew efficiencies. The Autoship H2020 project, led by Marco Molica Colella from CiaoTech - Gruppo PNO – PNO Group, has successfully demonstrated these innovations on two vessels, achieving key milestones towards #zeroemission #shipping. With comprehensive digital upgrades and successful pilots in short sea shipping and inland waterways, Autoship H2020 paved the way for a greener maritime future. Moving forward from the project’s achievements, next steps will include further refining autonomous shipping innovations, and increasing their application within the #maritime industry. To achieve this, new projects have been launched to build on Autoship H2020’s successes. One such EU-funded project, called SEAMLESS Project, will focus on enhancing autonomous shipping technologies such as remote control. Another EU-funded project, called ReNEW, will introduce an innovative autonomous barge, the ZULU X-barge, to demonstrate resilient inland water transport through digitisation.
