Building Knowledge at Elkhorn Middle School: We’re excited to share that our survey team members, Jim Toberman and Drew Sertle, recently had the opportunity to assist with construction staking of the new outdoor pavilion project at the Elkhorn Area Middle School! Our involvement in the project is through a partnership with the Elkhorn Area School District and the Elkhorn YouthBuild Program. The building will be used as an outdoor learning space for the students and community. The project was an educational experience for the students, as Jim and Drew demonstrated how survey equipment is properly used in construction layout. It was a wonderful experience to engage with the next generation of tradespeople and share the importance of precision and accuracy in surveying. We’re proud to have contributed to the development of this new pavilion and the education of these students, and we look forward to construction starting soon! Pictured are Jim and Drew with the YouthBuild students and the groundbreaking ceremony. #buildingforthefuture

The mainline paving crews are rolling on the Kenosha Innovation Neighborhood site! We're thrilled to see the above-ground progress after months of diligent work on the sanitary sewer, stormwater sewer, and water main systems. In addition to the mainline paving progress, the grading crew has been working to finish placing the final topsoil, and the landscaping crews are near completion on the detention pond. Significant progress is also continuing on the KIN's other projects. We're watching the Kenosha Innovation Center take shape as crews erect the building's steel frame. The LakeView Technology Academy crews continue their work on the building's interior and windows. • Here’s a shout-out to Ellyn Subak, P.E., who is celebrating her 11th anniversary with R.H. Batterman & Co., Inc.! Ellyn began her career with our design team and transitioned into a construction project manager a few years ago. This summer, you can find her on-site in Sun Prairie overseeing the STH 19 Intersections Project. When asked about her upcoming anniversary, Ellyn remarked, “It’s crazy to think it’s been 11 years already! I am extremely grateful for my time at Batterman, as I have grown professionally through my experience in design, construction management, and project management. I look forward to the coming year and many years into the future!” Ellyn, you are a terrific asset to our team, and we are so grateful for all your hard work and dedication over the past 11 years. Cheers to the many years to come!

  • CONSTRUCTION HAS BEGUN on the 80-100 Grand Avenue Riverwalk Extension project in Downtown Beloit, and our construction management team is in place and fully prepared to assist in the successful completion of this important local project! In this final phase of the project, our team will oversee all construction, including building demolition, removal of the structure over the Rock River, and new construction of the Rock River Trail/Downtown Riverwalk extension. We will also provide construction staking services and conduct material testing, reviews, and reporting. Batterman’s participation in this project began in the Fall of 2021 when we started working with the City of Beloit to help identify grants to support funding and assist in the grant writing and application process. The final grant applications were submitted in May 2022. Subsequently, in September 2022, the WDNR awarded the City a Municipal Flood Control Grant and a Stewardship Local Assistance Grant. In May 2023, Batterman was awarded the project contract for professional surveying, structural, environmental, and civil engineering services, including construction management and grant administration. For the project's first phase, we faced the interesting challenge of surveying the site on land and in the water, including a complete bathymetric survey. To gather the comprehensive dataset we needed, we used a mix of conventional survey instruments such as total stations and GNSS receivers (GPS), as well as more advanced methods such as sonar (to capture the bed of the Rock River) and scanners to capture the point cloud and sheet pile walls. For the design phase, Batterman partnered with Jewell Associates Engineers, Inc. and Brownfield Environmental Engineering Resources to design the project's structural, environmental, and civil components. The detailed data collected during the survey was utilized to gain a clear understanding of the impacts to the site due to the removal of the building and allowed for an efficient design to partially remove the existing bridge deck around the supporting girders and extend the bridge parapet wall to span the 100-foot gap created by the removal of the existing building then align the proposed riverwalk to maximize the developable land area while minimizing impacts to the Rock River and maintaining a seamless transition into the existing riverwalk. Design input from the City of Beloit, WI, the Public, and Hendricks Commercial Properties was considered and incorporated throughout the project. This resulted in the removal of a blighted, unimprovable building in a valued downtown location, an extension of the riverwalk, and a design/construction-ready site for future development. The building's abatement is now in progress, and the exterior demolition is expected to begin in late August or early September. Construction is scheduled to be completed in June 2025. We look forward to continuing to bring you project progress updates in the months ahead!

  • It’s the return of Dayton Menahan, who is joining us for a second summer internship! During his first year in the #Battermentorship program, he gained experience with all departments and discovered that he enjoyed working in the construction management area the most. He is pictured below, helping inspect the US-12 roadway project in Elkhorn. Dayton had this to say about his overall experience: “My past two summers with Batterman have been great! I have learned so much in my short time here and am excited to continue learning every day! I give major props to my co-workers who are always willing to take the time to explain things and help in whatever way possible.” We are excited for Dayton as he returns to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville to complete his senior year and earn his civil engineering degree. He plans to graduate in December and immediately begin his career in the construction industry! #NationalInternDay #engineeringstudents
