Last week, our team gathered to celebrate the 2024 Newbie’s Party—a cherished BCE tradition that's been going strong for over 30 years. Each year, the new hires from the previous year form a committee to plan and host a party for the office. This year, our Newbies brought the spirit of the Olympic Summer Games to our office, and colleagues tested their skills in a variety of fun games. Some of us even took home gold, silver, and bronze medals! Thanks, Newbies, for your efforts and an unforgettable event! 🏅 🎉

Oh, the places BCE goes! Our work takes us all over, from coast to coast and beyond. Senior Associate and Electrical Engineer Carrie Taylor recently found herself in Japan on an assignment at Misawa Air Force Base. This project includes assessments of existing facilities on multiple bases within the Indo-Pacific Command Air Force Operations. Carrie and her team traveled to perform electrical assessments and identify the needs of the existing facilities. "This helps establish infrastructure, upgrade priorities and costs to maintain existing facilities, support Air Force operations, and provide safe working conditions for the personnel" she explains. In honor of Women's History Month, we'd like to shine a spotlight on a non-profit organization that is near and dear to our hearts. Since 2020, BCE's female engineers have volunteered with IGNITE Worldwide to help increase gender equity and representation in STEM-focused careers. IGNITE, standing for “Inspiring Girls Now in Technology Evolution," aims to increase gender diversity in high-wage/high-demand STEM fields, such as technology and engineering. Jaclyn Baker Button, PE recently spoke on an IGNITE panel at Nautilus K-8, located in Federal Way Public Schools, for 5th-grade girls. She emphasizes the importance of such opportunities, “I think it is important to get girls excited about STEM, as our field is still very much male-dominated. Schools now have so many opportunities for kids to learn about STEM at an early age, with opportunities that didn't exist 20 years ago,” she explained. “Hopefully, an event where they see women in these types of careers can encourage them to try something new or pursue something that interests them and not have a mental barrier of STEM being ‘for boys.’” 🔎 👩🔬 👩💻 🧠

Yesterday, Chris Caffee and Brian Maloney were thrilled to present to WAMOA Region 6South and shed some light on the upcoming 2021 Washington State Energy Code changes, and how those will affect new and existing buildings. Congratulations to Aaron Scott, one of our Senior Electrical Designers, on achieving his Lighting Certification from the NCQLP! This accomplishment showcases his knowledge, understanding, and ability to effectively apply lighting principles and techniques. Aaron highlights the significance of this certification, noting that “lighting design is often a reaction to an existing design, which can result in a less-than-ideal product. By collaborating with architects, I aim to ensure a harmonious design that brings peace of mind to the client.” Aaron looks forward to meeting client needs in terms of design expectations and budget, and applying his skills across a broader scope such as interior, exterior, landscape, highway, and parking lot lighting. Well done, Aaron!
