Business For A Plastics Treaty
Non-profit Organizations
Bringing together +240 businesses committed to supporting the development of a UN treaty to end plastic pollution.
About us
The development of a legally binding UN treaty is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to tackle the plastic pollution crisis in a globally coordinated way. We must act urgently on a global, coordinated scale to accelerate the transition towards a circular economy for plastics, or the plastic pollution crisis will only get worse. The Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty brings together +230 businesses committed to supporting the development of an ambitious, effective and legally binding UN treaty to end plastic pollution. The coalition is convened by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and WWF, in collaboration with aligned businesses and supported by strategic NGO partners. The coalition will develop ambitious policy recommendations, engage with treaty negotiators, and build confidence in the business community on the benefits and necessity of an effective treaty that sets common goals, rules, and obligations to be implemented in national jurisdictions.

CEO & Co-Founder at Biotic - Entrepreneurship, Innovation, Business Development, Marketing - TEDx Speaker
It was important for Biotic to join the Business For A Plastics Treaty, convened by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and WWF, as part of our commitment to transforming the plastics industry and building a future free of plastic pollution. The Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution will be holding their fifth meeting soon to finalize the text of an international, legally binding policy instrument to end plastic pollution (sadly we can't make it). Nevertheless, we support a comprehensive plan to: - Promote innovative materials - Instill accountability measures - Reduce virgin fossil plastic production - Support a just transition for livelihoods and communities across the plastics supply chain - Remediate existing plastic pollution Read our most recent blog post to learn more. #GlobalPlasticsTreaty #EndPlasticPollution #Biz4PlasticsTreaty

With 7 weeks to go until the last negotiating session of the Global Plastics Treaty in Busan, I was encouraged to hear the level of convergence across my fellow panelists from government, NGOs, and industry around the need for global rules within an ambitious and effective Plastics Treaty. A special thanks to H.E Ambassador Luis Vayas Valdivieso, who has been working tirelessly as the INC Chair between negotiation sessions, seeking areas of agreement and encouraging all delegates to work towards Treaty text that will address the full life-cycle of plastics. The baton is now passed to the delegates for INC-5. With H.E. Amb Luis Vayas Valdivieso #Ecuador, David Azoulay of Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL), Bethanie Carney Almroth of Scientists' Coalition for an Effective Plastics Treaty, Mohammed Khashashneh #Jordan, Albert MAGALANG #Philippines, Tallash Kantai, Carolyn Deere Birkbeck of Forum on Trade, Environment & the SDGs (TESS) and Business For A Plastics Treaty #ThereIsNoTimeToWaste #BusinessNeedsGlobalRules #GlobalUNPlasticsTreaty #TomorrowStartsToday

What a Climate Week! My feet are sore but my heart is full. Every Climate Week, I try to strike a balance between panels/events to learn something new, and roundtables/smaller meetings to get stuff done. Maybe given that INC 5 is less than 2 months away, I gravitated towards the action-oriented events this time. Some highlights and takeaways: 🐒 Hearing from Dr. Jane Goodall on her ongoing relationship with nature, encouraging us to vote like our children’s lives depend on it (because they do) 🌏 Participating in the Business For A Plastics Treaty convening of business leaders, NGOs, and governments, emphasizing the need to land an ambitious and effective Treaty at INC 5 in November #BusinessNeedsGlobalRules and #TheresNoTimeToWaste 💰 Seeing ideas that were discussed during a session on financing the Global Treaty last Climate Week come to fruition this week, with tangible initiatives to improve the success of Treaty implementation in the Global South 🧬 Learning about scientific breakthroughs for materials to facilitate a lower carbon future 🟰 Understanding that Sustainability needs to be inclusive, and even Climate Week should not be viewed as an exclusive event that only top government officials and sustainability execs attend. I was glad to see youth activists, start-ups, NGOs, etc, and will take a personal committment to drive for a more inclusive environment at future Climate Weeks. ❤️ Connecting with some of the most amazing people driving positive change from all parts of the Sustainability space. #proudlymars #tomorrowstartstoday #bizforplasticstreaty #climateweekNYC Krystina Pastor Barry Parkin Erin Simon Rob Opsomer Ryan Shay Stephanie Zhu

It's been an important week in NYC where a key focus for Unilever was on the UN Plastics Treaty. Alongside the Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty, we are pushing for a global, legally binding treaty across the full life cycle of plastics #BusinessNeedsGlobalRules. At INC5 in November, we need governments to agree a treaty fit for purpose, with criteria on restrictions and phase-outs, global product design requirements, and harmonised guidelines for well-designed extended producer responsibility (EPR). This will reduce the amount of plastic ending up in the environment whilst growing industries and creating jobs. And for Unilever? It will turbo charge the delivery of our plastic (and climate) goals at a lower cost. A big thanks to the Business For A Plastics Treaty for hosting an important roundtable of business, NGO and governments.

"What we would like is a treaty that has some teeth," Unilever CEO Hein Schumacher said in an interview with Reuters on Monday. "From the very beginning we have said we prefer binding rules because we feel that it leads to a level playing field for business." One U.N. negotiating session, planned in November in Busan, South Korea, remains before the end-of-year deadline to ink an agreement. In Bangkok in August, member countries heard from specialists on plastics pollution, said Inger Andersen, the executive director of the UN Environment Programme. "It's entirely within member states' ability to do it by the end of the year," Andersen said. "The ball is in their court." -------- Read the full article at: https://lnkd.in/gWQ6hJgD Explore our ambition for the treaty ahead of INC-5 at: https://lnkd.in/ePmWmmS7 #BusinessNeedsGlobalRules #PlasticsTreaty #INC5 #Biz4PlasticsTreaty
