What is the #1 thing that local cities can do to address climate change that maybe you haven't heard of? Reach Codes! Yes, this is about building codes, but I promise it's worth the read. Reach Codes are local enhancements to state building codes. For instance, if a city wants higher fire standards for new housing construction, extremely important for California. But Reach Codes can also require greater climate benefits in new builds. For instance, requiring that every parking space at a new apartment building have EV charging or that new homes are built to high energy performance standards that favor fossil fuel-free energy. These codes literally help build the climate-friendly buildings we need to reduce emissions at scale. Peninsula Clean Energy has been working with our local cities for the past several years to adapt these innovative codes, which have had enormous impact.
