📣📣We need volunteer lawyers in Columbus and Cleveland to assist Afghan asylum seekers!📣📣 Many Afghan asylum seekers in Ohio face persecution in Afghanistan due to their anti-Taliban political views and support of US forces in Afghanistan. Most worked directly for US forces as translators and guides or had close family members who did so. Volunteers will represent clients applying for asylum, which will allow them to remain in safety in the US. You do not need to be an immigration attorney! I will provide training, mentoring and hands on support through the entire process. Please reach out for more info!

Catholic Charities, Diocese of Cleveland hosted 2024 Stokes Scholar and Cuyahoga Community College paralegal student Jasmine DeJesus this summer to learn about nonprofits in our Office of General Counsel. Colleague Sharen Spurrier and I were on hand at the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association as the Scholars received their certificates and shared insights from their summer experience. The future is bright for this fine group of passionate students who are committed to academic excellence and the pursuit of justice!

This past Friday, we celebrated the culmination of this year’s Louis Stokes Scholars Program with an inspiring graduation luncheon. Held in honor of our dedicated scholars, the event was marked by heartfelt speeches, gratitude, and commendable presentations. Brett Hammond, the grandson of the esteemed Louis Stokes, delivered a moving speech, echoing his grandfather’s wisdom to “Aim High” and persevere. The program co-chairs, Brandon Brown, Esq. and Jzinae Jeanbaptiste, expressed their appreciation for the committee, volunteers, employers, and supporters who made the program possible. A special thanks was also extended to the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Foundation and our generous sponsors, Pat Espinosa and Carter Strang. Stokes Scholars showcased what they learned and the significant relationships forged over the summer through impressive presentations. This luncheon not only celebrated their achievements but also set a motivating tone for their future endeavors in the legal field. More photos from the summer here: https://lnkd.in/gy5wvbkP

  • Catholic Charities, Diocese of Cleveland today announced its president & CEO, Patrick Gareau, will retire in January 2025. Gareau has led the health and human services organization, which Crain’s Cleveland Business ranks as the third largest nonprofit in Northeast Ohio, since 2011. “Catholic Charities provides help and creates hope for 400,000 unique individuals every year. I am proud of the impact we make in people’s lives every day through multigenerational services for families and children; emergency assistance to support food security and stable housing; critically needed behavioral health services for people seeking support; and health and wellness through CYO athletics and camps for thousands of youth and families every year,” said Gareau. “I am excited to see the vital work of Catholic Charities continue to grow with the next generation of leadership.” The agency delivers a broad spectrum of 150 services at 60 locations for people of every race and religion throughout eight counties: Ashland, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Summit and Wayne. “Patrick has been instrumental in expanding the reach of Catholic Charities, which has grown to serve 400,000 members of our community each year. I am profoundly grateful to Patrick for the giving spirit he has so clearly demonstrated throughout the course of his career, and I wish him well in his next chapter, where he will, no doubt, continue to serve the community,” said Diocese of Cleveland Bishop Edward C. Malesic. Prior to his appointment with Catholic Charities, Gareau served as president & CEO at St. Augustine Health Ministries from 1994 to 2011. In that role, he was responsible for management of multiple subsidiaries, working with boards, health care providers and a network of long-term care organizations. Gareau oversaw seven signification expansions throughout St. Augustine Health Ministries: Health Campus (1996), Child Enrichment Center (1999), Holy Family Home (2005), Holy Family Hospice (2006), Emerald Village Senior Living (2007), Holy Family Home Care (2010), and Congregat and Home Delivery Meal Program (2011). Gareau began his career with the U.S. Army for seven years, attaining the rank of Captain. His assignments included hospital and clinic administration and medical logistics management. The Catholic Charities board of directors, in collaboration with the Diocese, will launch a national search for the next president & CEO of Catholic Charities in the coming weeks.

  • Thank you Cuyahoga County's Office of Homeless Services for organizing a HUGE Giant Eagle donation of water bottles for our hunger shelters last week in response to the heat wave! Our clients at the Bishop Cosgrove Center and St. Augustine Hunger Center were able to stay cool and hydrated from your kindness. We cannot thank you enough for this tremendous donation and support of our mission!
